The Tallest Man on Earth – June 1st – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The term “suspension of disbelief” has been referred to as an audience’s willingness to overlook the implausibility of a premise or narrative in favor of entertainment. Case in point: Folk singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson, also known as The Tallest Man on Earth, is 30, married and Swedish. He’s also not particularly tall, much less the tallest (Google suggests he is 5’7″). Yet, at Matsson’s show at the Ogden Theatre last Saturday, you could have sworn people were there to see the Paul Bunyan-Woody Guthrie equivalent of Justin Timberlake.

Turbonegro – May 20th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

There must have been a ship docked at 935 E Colfax on Monday night, because as I walked up to the Ogden Theater I became engulfed in a sea of boys and girls wearing denim and sailor caps. A bit surreal since we were all awash with the neon of Colfax, and not the Pacific Ocean which was over 1,000 miles away. Learning to embrace the odd lately, I decided if KISS can have army of fans then Turbonegro can have its navy of fans.

James Blake – April 28th – Ogden Theater

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last Sunday the Ogden’s stage was lit sparsely with blues and purples befitting the tone of James Blake’s music, with strobe lights being the most adventurous light display of the evening. Apparently the opening act didn’t do much to enliven the audience, so by the time James Blake and a pair of accompanying musicians took to the stage, the anticipation in the room was tangible. Some call his sound post-dubstep or electro-soul but as any concertgoer knows, a label doesn’t matter when an artist hits the stage.

On what might have seemed like an average night on Colfax, those lucky enough to get the hottest ticket in town were also privy to the heat brought by The Disco Biscuits. The quartet’s Three night Colorado run, known as “Bisco Inferno,” brought fans from throughout the state and beyond to bounce, bob and frolic in the glow of not only their lasers, but also their masterfully layered instrumentation.

Railroad Earth – January 19th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

On Saturday evening, diehards, newcomers and plenty of Denver’s finest musical minds descended on The Ogden Theatre for the second night of Railroad Earth’s three-night 2013 winter run. Railroad Earth shows have become a fixture along the front-range over the last decade and the band never seems to disappoint. The song selection and instrumentals were off the charts and the Ogden crowd was as zany as it gets; even dancing right out the door at the end.
