Devo – June 23rd – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 3 min read

The DEVOted were out adorned in their plastic power domes. Legend has it that the Dome Hat collects energy that escapes from the crown of the human head and pushes it back into the Medula Oblongata for increased mental energy. Not sure if Devo founding member Jerry Casales really had this in mind when they came up with the design or not, but I can tell you that the line to get in was abuzz with energy and anticipation for the night’s show.

Alvin Risk – June 14th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 5 min read

Saturday night Summit Music Hall hosted Alvin Risk, the young Producer and DJ who has quickly ascended the ranks within the EDM scene with his genre-bending sound, combining and overlapping Dub Step, Drum’n’Bass, Moombaton, and Electrohouse with a wide range of vocal samples — amazingly, he pulls it off and he does it with a certain panache that is unmistakable. He did not fall short in his delivery; it was an awesome show, and though the crowd was sparse, this is not the last we will see of Alvin Risk, not by a long shot.

Nightmares on Wax (DJ Set) – March 27th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 5 min read

Fans old and new came out to the Summit Music Hall to glimpse the DJ stylings of legendary EDM producer Nighmares on Wax. The crowd was nicely varied and in great spirits; the music was chill, groovy and fairly well received, but was also somewhat lackluster, maybe because it was Thursday, and maybe because the headlining act did not go on until 12:30am. Good vibes, indeed. Not crazy, hyper dance party vibes. But good vibes.

Amon Amarth – February 11th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 3 min read

Sweden, Norway, and Athens, Ohio descended on Summit Music Hall last Tuesday for a stop on Amon Amarth’s seemingly endless ‘Deceiver of the Gods’ Tour. All three of the featured bands have a core following, and they were out in force at this show. It seemed like 80% of the room was adorned in a shirt from one of the bands, and all three bands were met with equal excitement as fans threw horns in the air, screamed lyrics, and broke out in mosh pits.

Passion Pit “Special DJ Set” – January 25th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Summit Music Hall filled to a healthy level fairly early last Saturday as fans of Massachusetts-based Indietronica group Passion Pit gathered to see what their “Special DJ Set” was all about. Unfortunately, the set, which consisted of two members of the group DJing, fell short on many fans’ expectations–an evening of Deep House is hardly what someone sees when they read the words “Passion Pit Special DJ Set” on a ticket. The music was great if you are into House music, but in some way, the whole evening seemed to be a bit of a ruse.

The Misfits – November 20th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 5 min read

Outcasts of all ages came out to Summit Music Hall last Wednesday night, all with the same thought: new Misfits are better than no Misfits. Though only one original member remains and the vocals have deteriorated, after 35 years, the band still knows how to get a crowd moving. The show wasn’t without it’s weak moments, but all in all, the Misfits delivered a commendable performance with support from locals Plan-B Rejects and Straight Outta Luck.

Papadosio – Friday October 4th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Papadosio has done something unique in the Jamband world–they have skillfully combined a singer-songwriter stance with a group of top-notch musicians operating outside the normal tropes of the Jamband canon. This is why they have been so successful, because they have rejected imitation and embraced innovation. Last Friday night Listen Up Denver! caught some of that innovation firsthand.
