“Funky To The Bone” marks the return of Colorado’s first grand master of Funk n Roll, Freddi Gowdy, in this “Sam & Dave meets Tower of Power” type of collaboration with Chris Daniels. It’s the first studio album for the Kings in eight years and the first album for Freddi since the Freddi Henchi Band recorded at Caribou Ranch in the 1980s.

And that’s not all! There are number of reasons this is a remarkable story:

  • Daniels and Gowdy are alive. It’s been almost five years since Daniels was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (thanks to a bone marrow transplant via stem cells from his sister Jane) and 15 years since Gowdy underwent cancer treatment for prostate cancer. This album is a celebration of life, survival, and the amazing fun of Funky To The Bone.
  • The music on the album has a theme, a sound and a remarkable cast of supporters who got involved in the album because they believed in the project. The theme is celebration, humor, funk and fun. The sound is the classic sound (Sly & The Family Stone meets Chicago 67’ with a pinch of the Saturday Night Live Band) in a Sam & Dave type collaboration.
Nate Todd

Nate Todd was born on the central plains of Nebraska, but grew up on the high plains of the Texas panhandle. With not much to do in either place, music was his constant companion. His parents dubbed the first two albums he ever owned onto a tape for him. Side A was Bert and Ernie’s Sing Along. Side B was Sgt. Peppers. His lifelong love affair with music started early as he practically grew up in a Rock & Roll band, with his father and uncle often taking him out on the road or into the studio with them. Nate began performing live at sixteen and hasn’t looked back, having played in numerous bands from L.A. to Austin. At the age of twenty he was bitten by the writing bug, and upon moving to Denver decided to pursue a degree from Metropolitan State University where he recently graduated with a B.A. in English and a minor in Cinema Studies.
