DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist: Renegades of Rhythm Tour – September 26th – Ogden Theatre

Sometimes the best live performances come from honoring the original masters. When DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist electrified the Ogden they devoted themselves to the King of Hip-Hop and record master, Afrika Bambaataa. Culling nearly a thousand records from Bambaataa’s massive collection, Shadow and Cut Chemist honored the legacy of the “Amen Ra of Hip-Hop Culture.”

Bassnectar – May 31st & June 1st – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Bassnectar roared into Red Rocks Amphitheater last weekend for two nights of mayhem and the result was nothing less than extraordinarily well organized chaos. This marked the 3rd straight year that Bassnectar has blasted the rocks and this years’ performance nearly matched that of the infamous 2011 show. This year featured the best collection of openers to date including masterful performances from A-Trax and DJ Shadow and thrilling sets from Treasure Fingers, Thriftworks, Tokimonsta and Two Fresh.

Levitate Festival – April 20th – 1stBank Center

It’s a bit of a drive for most of us out to the lovely city of Broomfield, but when the second annual Levitate Festival brought the likes of DJ Shadow and RUSKO, along with local producers Paper Diamond and Picture Plane, together on one stage, it was an easy drive to make. Bass rocked the walls of the small arena throughout the night and, as is becoming more and more common these days in the electronic music world, the visual displays were nothing short of extraordinary with Shadow’s “Shadowsphere” stealing the show.

Portishead Returns To The U.S. After A Lengthy Hiatus

Many bands shape genres during their evolution, and some bands redefine genres, radically altering them with transformations that show signs of the birth of a new sound. But very few bands have managed to define a sound from the first beat of its creation the way Portishead did 17 years ago. Stack on the qualifiers and hybrid genre tags, but not even the most creatively synthesized verbiage will do; in the end there’s only one answer when someone asks what Portishead sounds like: Portishead.
