Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats – August 21st – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

A cloud covered sky kept the temperature modest for a late August evening as a blend of Denver’s hip converged on Morrison’s marvel…Red Rocks. The demographic ranged from hipster to soccer mom, hippie to yuppie. Very diverse within the upper middle class, Caucasian world. We had a mild urge to go Hunter S. Thompson on it, take an assortment of substances and try to mingle, but it was a Sunday.

Soule Monde: A World Smashing Musical Story

Estimated read time 8 min read

In Latin “Sol” means “Sun.” In French “Monde” translates to “Earth.” In Vermontese Soule Monde (pronounced Sol-Leh Mon-Day) means drummer Russ Lawton and keyboardist Ray Paczkowski. In Haitian Creole “Soule Monde” translates to “smashed world,” which is exactly what will happen to yours when you hear this dynamic duo shatter conventional notions of Jazz, World-Beat, and Funk this Saturday at Cervantes’. Father John Misty – November 2nd – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The sold-out Bluebird was crowded and in high spirits as twenty and thirty-somethings finished their cigarettes, grabbed drinks from the bar, and got ready for the songs of Father John Misty’s recent release, Fear Fun. Misty’s last appearance in Denver was a drunken acoustic opening set for Youth Lagoon on the same stage in front of a largely disinterested crowd and from the looks of things on Friday, most of the crowd had missed that or, like myself, knew better and came for a second shot.

Mayer Hawthorne – October 20th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last Saturday at The Ogden Mayer Hawthorne proved that he is a natural performer and charmed the pants off of everyone in the room. He posed for photos, he crooned through a Frank Sinatra cover, and he even shared a mixed drink of Vernor’s Ginger Ale and Hennessy with a lucky lady in the crowd. In addition to belting out a very solid vocal performance, shaking a tambourine, and occasionally playing staccato rhythm guitar chords on a white Epiphone, Hawthorne worked the stage and crowd like a pro.

Guns N’ Roses – December 11th – 1st Bank Center

Estimated read time 6 min read

Guns N’ Roses marathon show at the 1st Bank Center was nothing short of over-the-top . . . in every way. From the stage set-up, to the three guitar attack, to the three hour set time, to the 34 song setlist, Axl Rose did it his way. When all was said and done I would say that ended up enjoying about half the show and on the drive home I did my best to figure out how to get that other hour and half of my life back. I have one word for you Mr. Rose: “Edit.”
