Last Saturday, Monophonics rolled into town and took over Cervantes’ Other Side with their one-of-a-kind blend of 70’s Funk, Soul, and Rock.  From the moment they took the stage, Kelly Finnigan and the rest of the band commanded the attention of every eyeball in the room.  There were fists pumping in the air as they cranked through “There’s a Riot Going On” from their trippy 2012 gem In Your Brain, and when they slowed things down for “Beggin'” the lovers in the room got close.  As the set wound down, Finnigan showed off his pipes on the always rowdy “Bang Bang” and the room descended into the madness of a post-midnight psychedelic dance party.  After a brief encore break the band came back and delivered the riveting “Holding Back Your Love” from 2015’s Sound of Sinning and when they left the stage for good crowd was desperately wanting more.  Hopefully Monophonics will be back in town soon and, when they return, you’ll want to do yourself a favor and be there for the party.

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
