Greta Van Fleet rolled through Denver last weekend for a pair of sold-out shows at The Fillmore and their rabid fans turned out in droves.  I have to admit that I’m a little behind the curve on these guys, having only heard a few songs before the show, but now that I’ve seen them I’ve got to say that I’m not sure what all the fuss is about.  There is no doubt that they are talented and charismatic, but if I can be frank here, the music they are playing is so derivative that it’s almost boring.  These guys have been compared to Led Zeppelin since the first time they stepped on stage and, while that’s not a bad thing in and of itself, I felt like they were trying far to hard to emulate the mighty British band.  Hell, Michigan born lead singer Josh Kiszka even spoke with a British accent when he addressed the crowd midway through the show.  That was all a little over-the-top for me.  In the end I can see why they are attracting fans, but I’d rather throw on The Song Remains the Same and watch the original.

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
