Friday the 13th struck The Black Pumas and their show at Dillon Amphitheater last weekend when the band was forced to cancel their headlining slot just hours before the gig (and with very little specific information as to why). While that was bad news for many ticket holders, I was already on my way to the show and very excited to catch opener Neal Francis so the last line of the cancellation email made my week: “We are very sorry that the Black Pumas will not be performing for us this evening. However, tonight’s opening support artist is on-site and we are pleased to offer a FREE SHOW featuring an evening of ’70s tinged, classic Funk, Soul, and R&B, with Neal Francis. Gates @ 6pm | Show 7pm”

Neal’s debut album Changes has been in near constant rotation in my house this year and the prospect of seeing him live was what had led me to buy tickets to the show in the first place. Now we got a full two set show! Thank you concert gods!

Francis and his band wasted no time and dove right in a few minutes after 7 with the lead track from Changes, “This Time,” as the crowd began to fill up the amphitheater. While we thought that maybe it was going to be a sparsely attended show due to the Pumas cancellation, by the time the band was running through “Changes Parts 1 and 2” late in the set, the area in front of the stage had filled in significantly and all the way back on the lawn people were up and dancing despite the occasional drizzle.

In addition to four or five tracks from his debut, Francis gave us a sneak peak at his upcoming album In Plain Sight with six great tunes that I’d never heard before. The lead single “Can’t Stop The Rain” dropped this week and you can Listen Here Denver! Suffice it to say we are in for a treat when this album drops on November 5th (pre-order here).

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
