John Craigie’s performance at The Ogden Theater on December 16th was a special night of music and laughter. The solo acoustic set was filled with humor, wit, and just a touch of political commentary. Craigie’s unique approach to music and storytelling kept the audience engaged throughout the entire show. Songs like “Part Wolf,” “Laurie Rolled Me a J,” and “I Wrote Mr. Tambourine Man” showcased his songwriting skills and his uncanny storytelling ability was on display with the between song banter. The crowd was in for a treat when Craigie teased a little of David Bowie’s “Young Americans” within “Mallory” as he joked he stole the melody from the late genius.

The crowd was primarily made up of late 20s and early 30s music lovers, and the atmosphere was vibrant. The theater was pretty full, with the balcony open (unlike several Ogden shows I’ve been to recently), and the audience was clearly there to have a good time. Craigie’s humor added to the festive atmosphere and kept the crowd laughing and singing along. He even waxed political with his hilarious song “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” which was a nod to the current political climate and the impact that politics are having on the world these days.

Seeing Craigie is always a memorable experience. His ability to connect with the audience is truly special and it was clear that everyone in attendance was having a great time. If you are a fan of acoustic music and humor this guy is a must-see. Just a few days before Christmas, the crowd went home with happy hearts, already looking forward to his next show.

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
