Last Saturday night at the Hi-Dive, Denver’s own Latin Ska ensemble, Roka Hueka, delivered a brief, but powerful set opening for legendary New York Ska outfit The Toasters. Playing to an enthusiastic and packed house, frontman Andres Gonzalez belted out original tunes in his native Spanish as the band raged behind him and dancers skanked at the lip of the stage.
In the latter half of the set, Gonzalez invite Hans Meyer, lead singer of up-and-coming Denver Punk act Wild Lives (a band that also features Roka Hueka drummer Blake Pendergrass) to the stage. Meyer is known for his Iggy Pop meets Roger Daltry-esque stage presence and, while the cramped stage didn’t allow him to fully strut his stuff, he gave the crowd a taste and they ate it up.
See below for photos from the performance, and don’t miss these guys next time they play! They’ve sold-out Ophelia’s, opened for The Wailers, and more . . . you won’t regret it!
