Dave Matthews Band – August 28th – Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Dave Matthews Band has long been known for their highly energetic live show, and the promise of an acoustic set to kick things off and the addition of special guest Béla Fleck was cause for excitement. Watching the show felt a little like flirting with an old girlfriend…it wasn’t heading anywhere, but it was nice to spend a little time together. It was astounding how much had changed and yet everything remained the same.

The Samples – December 12th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 6 min read

27 years after their initial formation, and 25 years after the release of their first album, the “original line-up” of The Samples reunited Friday night for a single show at The Fillmore Auditorium. Though the original lineup began to fracture in 1997, the songs written and recorded by the band during those first ten years remain a powerful and vivid soundtrack to the young adult lives of many dedicated followers. The hopes were high, the energy was elevated, and the plaid was plentiful. This crowd was not going to be denied a party.

Maceo Parker – October 19th – Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom

Estimated read time 3 min read

Church was in session Sunday night as Maceo Parker and his band of Funk-fueled musicians took Denverites on a journey to the early days of Funk. The huge room at Cervantes’ was pretty empty early on, leaving those who arrived in time for Analog Son wondering why people were opting to stay in rather than see a legend like Maceo take the stage in such a small club. Halfway through the night, fans of the Funk had come out of the woodwork and the saxophone was preaching to the congregation.

Gov’t Mule & Vintage Trouble – November 5th – Ogden

Estimated read time 5 min read

Vintage Trouble and Gov’t Mule shared the stage at The Ogden last week in front of a packed house of Southern boys, grizzled bikers and a smattering of hippies. It was the opener who left puddles of sweat on-stage as they served up vintage Blues, Rock and Soul with a fervor that is seldom equaled these days, but Warren Haynes and his band earned points for consistency as they delivered two monster sets of Rock and Blues that showcased the immense talent on stage.

Chipotle’s Cultivate Festival – October 6th – City Park

Estimated read time 7 min read

Last weekend Chipotle’s first annual Cultivate Festival rolled into Denver and was met with frigid temps (for this time of year anyway), grey skies, and even some sustained snow showers. While this unseasonable weather probably kept a few thousand people away from the festival, it didn’t dampen the spirits of those who made it out to City Park bundled up against the arctic blast to enjoy a day of food, drinks, and of course, music. In the end, despite the cold, it was a smashing success in my mind and will be a great addition to the fall out here.

Hallow Dog – Good Fight

Estimated read time 2 min read

Hallow Dog hails from the storied town of Woodstock, New York with a pastoral, acoustic-based Americana sound to match. The distinctive voice of lead vocalist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist John Holt is at the core of every tune and at first listen, one might draw comparisons to American jam and roots-rock acts like Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, Little Feat and the Grateful Dead. However, sonically speaking, additional elements like plentiful Pedal Steel, Mandolin, Fiddle, and Dobro place the material squarely in the old-time Americana tradition.
