Randy Newman – August 7th – Denver Botanic Gardens

There’s no skirting the issue here, this was one of the wettest concerts of the year. While a good number of folks clearly stayed home, about two-thirds of the ticket holders showed up and took their spots on the Botanic Gardens lawn for a night with the incomparable songwriter Randy Newman. After being shuttled to the stage in a golf cart, Newman started his set shortly after 6:30 as fans tried to keep their cheese and crackers out of the incessant rain which didn’t let up until the musician said “good-night.”

The Punch Brothers – June 13th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens concerts are always a true marker of summer. The blossoms, the warm air, the threatening clouds, and the wine, oh the wine. There are very few summer traditions in this town that are more fun than packing up a picnic and some wine, and heading to the gardens for a show. For this one, Gaby Moreno and the Austin based David Garza set a very high bar as the openers, but it was one that the uniquely talented Punch Brothers cleared with grace.

Ziggy Marley – June 8th – Denver Botanic Gardens

The second Ziggy Marley and his band took the stage at the Gardens last week, fans were on their feet and moving close to the stage to ensure they staked a claim on dancing space. Many of the Garden faithful had caught Marley’s performance last summer and knew they were in for a long night of upbeat songs that were guaranteed to keep feet moving and hearts smiling.

Last Tuesday saw beautiful weather in Denver and the city’s Reggae fans turned out in droves to catch Ziggy Marley, the oldest son of the godfather of the genre Bob Marley. From beginning to end the show had an energy not usually found at The Gardens. The volume seemed to be a bit louder than normal and the crowd was as exuberant as the Gardens gets. Here’s to more shows like this one at York Street!

What a night at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The weather was picture perfect and the late afternoon sun was shining on the Chihuly glass exhibit that inhabits the gardens through November. Fans of Taj Mahal and John Hiatt sipped wine as they strolled the paths, chatted with friends and took in the stunning glass that is expertly woven into the natural surroundings before being dazzled by the music that came from the stage under Chihuly’s bright orange sun.

Ranked in the top 5 most influential guitar players of all time, B.B. King graced the stage of Denver Botanic Gardens last Monday for yet another performance. The elegant garden venue seemed like the perfect fit for the legendary blues-man in the twilight of his career to be playing on what was a perfect summer evening. Also adding to the events activities was the ongoing Chihuly Exhibition throughout the gardens, giving concert-goers a sensory bonanza of entertainment, art, and beautiful vegetation.
