The Punch Brothers – June 13th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens concerts are always a true marker of summer. The blossoms, the warm air, the threatening clouds, and the wine, oh the wine. There are very few summer traditions in this town that are more fun than packing up a picnic and some wine, and heading to the gardens for a show. For this one, Gaby Moreno and the Austin based David Garza set a very high bar as the openers, but it was one that the uniquely talented Punch Brothers cleared with grace.

But James Hunter has been playing R&B for 30 plus years and by his own admission even he was 20 years late to the game. Hunter, however, is pushing the boundaries of R&B by upending the genre’s normal tropes and motifs while still somehow operating within them.

The Listen Up Denver! crew rolled into Telluride with one simple intention: Do not take this for granted. We were in Telluride! Man, it was amazing! The weather was epic, the beer flowed freely and the music, oh the music. The footprints of musicians including Rich Robinson, Sharon Jones, and Otis Taylor dotted the stage throughout the weekend, and while the sun warmed the day, clear and starry skies cooled off the evenings and the dancing lasted till the wee hours of the morning.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – June 1st – Botanic Gardens

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings brought their Super Soul Revue to a criminally undersold Botanic Gardens on Wednesday night. Despite the empty seats, the band didn’t hold back at all and delivered a two hour set that surely had many in attendance running home to tell all their friends about their new favorite band.
