Rocky Mountain Folks Festival – August 17th & 18th – Lyons, CO

This year’s Rocky Mountain Folks Festival featured marquee names like John Butler Trio, Patty Griffin and John Prine but it was the lesser known acts like Seryn, Foy Vance, Nathaniel Rateliff and Charles Bradley that really wow’d the faithful crowd. Word on the street months before the festival was that the organizers and staff of Planet Bluegrass were more excited by the acts this year than they had been at any time in recent memory, and they just may have been right on!

Deer Tick – May 13th – The Bluebird Theatre

When Deer Tick took the stage on Sunday night at The Bluebird, there were light bulbs that flashed the words “Deer” and “Tick” behind the band. Lead singer, and founder of the band, John McCauley was decked out in a fancy pink blazer and tie that was strangely appropriate for his band’s one-of-a-kind combination of blues, folk, country and in your face punk rock. McCauley’s gritty voice not only translated from record to stage almost seamlessly, but the emotional lyrics were brought to life in the live setting.

Todd Snider – April 26th & 27th – Boulder & Denver

Troubadour Todd Snider recently made a pair of stops here on the Front Range and we were lucky enough to have members of the Listen Up Denver! team at both of the shows. While it does appear that the shows shared some similar moments, it’s very interesting to see the different perspective of our writers. Each year seems to bring more and more for this man, and 2012 may be his biggest year yet!

Lyle Lovett is high up on the list of legends that represents this raw style that is so much more than what passes for Country music to the masses.
