Widespread Panic – October 30th – 1stBank Center

For the second time in three years, the 1stBank Center played host a Widespread Panic Halloween throw-down. The costumed audience was a tapestry of color and imagination. Age, race, and sex were all masked by the holiday’s disguises and it was sublime to see the release of inhibitions allowing men to wear dresses and women spoof a handsy Donald Trump. It’s only once a year you can see a patron go through security wearing dynamite or have an axe sticking out of their head with ease; long live Halloween shows!

The tradition of the Sunday afternoon matinee as a grand finale to Widespread Panic’s annual Red Rocks stand is damn near timeless and, this past Sunday, the band and their fans proved why yet again. Beach balls bounced around a hot and sweaty crowd that smelled like “ladies lying in the sun” due to all the sunscreen applied to fend off the baking mid-day sun, and there was a carefree, beach party attitude in the air.

Widespread Panic are Red Rocks most prolific performers having sold-out 51 consecutive shows at the legendary venue and we were there to see number 49 go down in the history books as another heater on Friday night. The show was fast paced despite the lack of flow from song-to-song like a typical Panic performance, but that had no bearing on the gravity of the song performances.
