Joy Adams of Big Richard Talks Girl Power, a New Album, and Giant Penises

The fabulously talented women who make up this four piece band have been making waves in a largely male dominated scene and it’s been awesome to watch. They came together for a one-off show at the McAwesome Festival in Castle Rock and there’s been no looking back since.

While the reason it was happening was tragic, the line-up was formidable. In the words of musical director Nick Forster, it was like all of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival coming together on one night.

RockyGrass – July 26, 27, 28 – Planet Bluegrass, Lyons

From the opening notes of I’m With Her to the Bluegrass not Bluegrass of Punch Brothers, RockyGrass was a joy. There were smiling faces, the rush of the St. Vrain, and the sights and smells of the vendor area. The workshops inside the Wildflower Pavilion created an intimacy with the crowd, while the many shades of ‘grass on the bill echoed through the canyon and brought out the dancing spirit in everyone.

WinterWonderGrass – Steamboat Springs – February 23rd, 24th, 25th

First of all, before we get too far down the road, each and every person who was in Steamboat for WinterWonderGrass last weekend is to be commended. From employees and organizers to fans and musicians, this was a dedicated bunch. Temperatures plunged down into the single digits as they worked, danced, poured, and played, but those who played music up on the big stage have to be singled out as the most hardcore of them all. While many could bundle up and put on the heaviest of ski gloves to keep fingers from freezing solid, those musicians had to keep their fingers dancing on the strings, skins, and keys in a vain attempt to keep the blood flowing.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival – June 15, 16, 17, 18 – Telluride Town Park

This year’s installment of Telluride Bluegrass Festival saw a multitude of new acts and many mainstays. The weather was pristine and the people were generous with a place on their tarp or camp and an easy smile. Every day seemed to boast weather better than the last and each act left the faithful thinking, “well there is no way they can top that. Friends old and new, families of tradition and families making new traditions, all came together for the undeniable love of Bluegrass music.
