Is it the people? It’s all these things and more. Planet Bluegrass is one of the best places in the world and RockyGrass is another excuse to venture up to Lyons and bask in it’s amazing vibe.

From the opening notes of I’m With Her to the Bluegrass not Bluegrass of Punch Brothers, RockyGrass was a joy. There were smiling faces, the rush of the St. Vrain, and the sights and smells of the vendor area. The workshops inside the Wildflower Pavilion created an intimacy with the crowd, while the many shades of ‘grass on the bill echoed through the canyon and brought out the dancing spirit in everyone.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival – June 15, 16, 17, 18 – Telluride Town Park

On Thursday, June 15th, the main street of Colorado’s most captivating town, was abuzz with an energy and excitement as the crowds (some there for days) made their way to Town Park for the start of the 45th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival. There is no better setting for a music festival; there is no better music for such a setting.

String Cheese Incident – July 15th & 16th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Good vibes dominated the scene when String Cheese Incident returned to their home court at Red Rocks last weekend for a three night stand. Kind souls with smiling faces abounded, some were decked out in their best Steam Punk attire, others in fairy wings, and still others in sequined capes. It’s was a carnival for the senses and while the music from the headliners was a little uneven, openers Kamasi Washington and Tauk were incredible.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival – June 16, 17, 18, 19 – Telluride Town Park

This year’s installment of Telluride Bluegrass Festival saw a multitude of new acts and many mainstays. The weather was pristine and the people were generous with a place on their tarp or camp and an easy smile. Every day seemed to boast weather better than the last and each act left the faithful thinking, “well there is no way they can top that. Friends old and new, families of tradition and families making new traditions, all came together for the undeniable love of Bluegrass music.

Telluride Bluegrass. Once you’ve been there, whether it’s for a day, a week, or forty consecutive years, it becomes part of you. The String Cheese Incident – December 31st – 1stBank Center

The excitement in the air was palpable at 1stBank Center last week. Costumes abounded, glitter and blinking lights dazzled the eyes, and thousands of balloons hung suspended from the ceiling in giant nets. It was a String Cheese New Year’s Eve Incident and no one in the room would have expected anything less.They played well, very well even, but there was something missing this New Year’s at 1stBank. String Cheese fans know what the band is capable of, and on nights like this, the’ve come to expect it . . . for better . . . or worse.

Sam Bush & Del McCoury – March 24th – The Boulder Theater

The legendary Sam Bush and Del McCoury were in town and this time they said farewell to their band mates in favor of a super intimate acoustic set that saw the normally jubilant bluegrass contingent hushed and attentive to a rare duet performance from two of most talented and charismatic personalities in the music industry.

The Ogden Theatre was home to a Bluegrass bonanza on Saturday night, and everyone was getting down! The combination of the Travelin’ McCourys and Keller Williams brought out lovers of all types of Bluegrass, and the musicians brought out the best in each other. String Cheese Incident fans, Bluegrass traditionalists, dready hill people, good ol’ boys, and Festivarians all danced the night away as a stage full of well-loved musicians whipped together a perfect set list for a fun loving Colorado crowd.
