Dropkick Murphys & Rancid – October 1st – Mission Ballroom (Outside)

Estimated read time 3 min read

Seven-inch split albums were originally done on vinyl, with music from one artist on one side of the record and music from a second artist on the opposite side. Since the early 1980s, the format has been used widely by independent record labels and punk bands. Friday nights “Boston to Berkeley II” tour had the same benefits of a split EP.

Recently we have seen bands like the Damned, the Misfits, and now T.S.O.L start touring again. Are all these bands from the 80’s just tapping into nostalgia, or is punk still relevant?

The Interrupters – April 5th – Ogden Theater

Estimated read time 2 min read

On a warm Friday evening in early April my Uber dropped me in front of The Ogden Theater. On the marquee below the purposefully distorted letters spelling out the headliners name were the words “Sold Out”. There weren’t even scalpers outside selling overpriced tickets on the secondary market. Sold out, meant sold out. Denverites must really love their ska-punk like their beloved Colfax Avenue, a little dirty, a bit raw, and always entertaining.

Voodoo Glow Skulls & Mustard Plug – December 6th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

Although Saturday night’s event at the Gothic was a Ska show, the crowd was distinctly Punk. There were Mohawks, patches, and spikes (both Liberty and on the jackets) galore as fans braved the cold air Saturday to see two legendary bands co-headlining The Gothic Theatre. Together the bands have an accumulation of forty years of musical experience and it showed with great performances by both bands.

MxPx – January 30th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 5 min read

The crowd that filled in The Bluebird was not what you would expect for MxPx, a band that has been pigeonholed as being a Christian Punk band over the years. But the variety and amount of fans present last Thursday proved this band’s “label” doesn’t matter to the people MxPx’s music has touched throughout their 21-year career. The Bremerton, Washington based band delivered an awesome set and played all the crowd favorites, even some requests, and everyone left with giant smiles on their faces, ecstatic to have seen such an underrated but highly influential band.

Riot Fest – September 21st & 22nd – May Farms, Byers, CO

Estimated read time 6 min read

After a beautiful day on Saturday, Sunday brought the rain to Byers, Co and Riot Fest. Sunday’s headliner, Blink 182 didn’t hit the stage after midnight due to a long weather delay and the mud that was caked onto everything brought out the inner Punk Rocker in everyone. Clothes were soaked with water and blood but the hardcore fans stuck it out. Rain or shine the tickets said, and many wouldn’t have traded anything for a weekend that brought acts like The Replacements, Iggy and the Stooges, Public Enemy, and Rancid to the Mile High City.

Goldfinger – February 2nd – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Last Saturday wasn’t just another night on Colfax. Those who were lucky enough to cram themselves into The Ogden Theatre for The Nuns of Brixton, Synthetic Elements, and Goldfinger saw stage diving, crowd surfing, and middle aged nuns playing Clash covers. In a strange juxtaposition the show closed with a cover of the Nena version of “99 Red Balloons.” Quite simply, if you weren’t having fun, you weren’t trying.
