Broken Social Scene – October 5th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 6 min read

Broken Social Scene always seemed more like an idea than a traditional band. The Canadian collective was established as a gathering of like-minded artists in Toronto with a laissez-faire philosophy. The various “members” of the group were free to come as they were, when they wanted, and leave the same way. And it worked. For the first half of the first decade of the 21st century, the unofficial leader of this “scene,” Kevin Drew, brought together no fewer than twenty musicians to release three Indie Rock albums considered canon.

alt-J – July 27 – Red Rocks Amphitheater

Estimated read time 3 min read

Shows on Monday nights are usually referred to as “tough,” “inconvenient,” and even of the “take it or leave it” variety but the buzz on the way out of the venue last Monday was about this being the best Red Rocks show so far this summer. That’s a huge compliment when you consider the incredible headliners that have graced the Red Rocks stage recently. With a starry night, warm summer breeze, low humidity, no bugs…it was a “night on the Rocks” to remember!

DeadPhish Orchestra – March 8th – Cervantes’ Other Side

Estimated read time 4 min read

Last Saturday night at Cervantes’ Other Side the usual Denver Jamband suspects were out in force to groove to the tunes of the “daddies and granddaddies” of the Jam scene: Phish and the Grateful Dead as DeadPhish Orchestra delivered two monster sets of favorites culled from the catalogs of both seminal jambands. From “Birds of a Feather” to a perfectly executed “You Enjoy Myself” and “Birdsong” to “Cumberland Blues” these boys proved yet again they’ve got the chops.

Foals – June 4th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem recently stressed that making people dance is axiomatic, remarking, “It’s like food – if they’re not eating it, you’ve screwed it up.” U.K. band Foals obviously got the memo, taking Denver back to the basics at the Ogden Theater last week. A mixed crowd of glittered faces, hoodies, and retro victory roll hairdos braved the rare rainy Denver evening proving that if dancing is fundamental, it’s also universal.

Jane’s Addiction – The Great Escape Artist

Estimated read time 2 min read

Navarro’s guitar-god solos, Perkins’ trance inducing percussion, and Farrell’s erotic shaman-like vocals combine to create an album that nears the perfection of “Nothing’s Shocking.” Tracks “Irresistible Force,” “Splash a Little Water On It,” and “Words Right Out of My Mouth,” show how Jane’s, like the Doors before them, refuse to be mere entertainers and continue to push the boundaries of their music.
