A cold, heavy rain poured on plastic wrapped Elephant Revival Sunday night at Red Rocks. It was the last chance to take in one of Colorado’s biggest and best homegrown acts, before they dissolved into an indefinite hiatus. Despite all of the water, fans stuck out a full evening of folk-inspired music, beginning early with North Carolina’s Hiss Golden Messenger, followed by Portland’s Blind Pilot. There were a handful of special Colorado guests throughout the evening. Blind Pilot brought out hometown hero Gregory Alan Isakov to sing on “Like Lions,” and Governor John Hickenlooper introduced Elephant Revival. Elephant Revival paraded out a list of guests throughout the night, including founding member Sage Cook, Bonnie Paine’s sister, Annie, violinist Enion Pelta-Tiller, along with a handful of others, many of whom joined them for a touching cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends.” The band played a gorgeous, and bittersweet set, full of their mystic, earthy folk music, including favorites “Grace of a Woman,” “Birds and Stars,” “When I Fall,”  and their fantastic version of Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar,” among countless others. The evening, and possibly Elephant Revival’s career together ended with one last “Sing to the Mountain.” I look forward to the new directions each of them will go, hopefully still here in our backyard.
