When Chris Robinson and his new project, As The Crow Flies, landed at The Ogden in Denver last weekend, the scene was abuzz with speculation about how the music would compare to The Black Crowes.  Sure, the brothers are on the outs, but Chris’s voice was one of the main anchors of the Crowes sound and the cast of players around them was often in flux anyway.  For this project Chris enlisted the talents of three former Crowes in guitarist Audley Freed, bassist Andy Hess and keyboardist Adam MacDougal alongside the up-and-coming guitar-slinger Marcus King and former Levon Helm Band drummer Tony Leone.  The Crowes trademark two guitar attack was very present as the six piece ran through favorites like “Remedy,” “Wiser Time,” She Talks To Angels,” “Jealous Again,” and more.  It was a night for Crowes fans to relive the glory days, that’s for sure, but in my mind it just wasn’t the same without Rich’s stoic presence and unmistakable tone.

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
