As The Crow Flies – May 6th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 2 min read

When Chris Robinson and his new project, As The Crow Flies, landed in Denver last weekend, the scene was abuzz with speculation about how the music would compare to The Black Crowes. Sure, the brothers are on the outs, but Chris’s voice was one of the main anchors of the Crowes sound and the cast of players around them was often in flux anyway. For this project Chris enlisted the talents of three former Crowes in guitarist Audley Freed, bassist Andy Hess and keyboardist Adam MacDougal alongside the up-and-coming guitar-slinger Marcus King and former Levon Helm Band drummer Tony Leone.

JJ Grey & Mofro, The Magpie Salute, North Mississippi Osborne – September 22nd – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 2 min read

Red Rocks played host to yet another perfectly billed afternoon of guitar-driven Rock and Roll. Don’t get us wrong, there was no shortage of great songwriting and singers too, but at the end of the day it was a guitar lovers dream. The day started out with North Mississippi Osborne who set a very high bar but Black Crowes spin-off Magpie Salute was up to the challenge and the night was rounded out by the southern soaked Soul of JJ Grey & Mofro.

The music Chris Robinson has been involved with over the last 30 years has made an indelible mark on the patchwork of American musical history. His current project, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, focuses more on the roll rather than the rock, through a Grateful Dead influenced psychedelic space that is as heady as anything that came out of Marin County in the 1970s.

Jackie Greene – June 20th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Last Friday night The Gothic Theatre was the place to be for good ol’ fashioned Americana Rock-n-Roll. Jackie Greene was in the house and while he didn’t bring the hippest and youngest crowd in town out to see him perform, his fans are loyal and passionate. There was plenty of elbow room to move and dance on the floor of the Art Deco theater but it by no means felt empty as aging Deadheads put back their whiskey shots and puffed joints while their more conservative contemporaries pretended not to notice.
