Never miss a Sunday show is a mantra of the Widespread Panic faithful, and boy did it hold true this year.  I have to admit that I’m partial to the Sunday show and whether it’s because of the sunshine, the beach party vibe, or the ear-to-ear smiles on the 10,000 people packed into The Rocks, I don’t know – and frankly I don’t care . . . it’s fun.  Right out of the gate, this one started on the slower side with Vic Chestnut’s “Let’s Get The Show On the Road” and “Bear’s Gone Fishin'” but the laid back vibe suited the throngs of spent fans getting their act together as the sun fell behind the mountains.  As the set moved on, the band picked up the pace with crowd favorites “Bust It Big” and “Diner” that set the scene for a set ending “Pigeons” that left everyone glowing for the final setbreak of the weekend.

Whereas the first set kicked off with “Let’s Get The Show On The Road,” JB and company dove into the second stanza with “Let’s Get Down To Business” and get down to business they did with “Chainsaw City,” “Up All Night,” and a pair of stellar covers in Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” and Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” – the later of which had only been played once before on New Year’s of 2014 (a gap of 193 shows).  The band closed out the second set with the anthem “Ain’t Life Grand” before returning with “You Should Be Glad” and a surprise take on “You Wreck Me” in honor of the late Tom Petty.  It was a hell of an afternoon and one that reinforced the old adage “never miss a Sunday show”

Music has always been a part of my life. It probably all started listening to old Grateful Dead, Peter Paul & Mary, and Simon & Garfunkel records that my parents had, but it wasn't long before they were taking me to concerts like Starship, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Huey Lewis & The News. I got the bug to write about music after reviewing an Eric Clapton concert for a creative writing project in high school but didn't really take it up seriously until 2002. Since then I have published countless articles in The Marquee Magazine and done some work for Jambase.com, SPIN Magazine, and various other outlets. I started Listen Up Denver! as a way to share the music information that is constantly spilling out of my head with people who care. Please enjoy!
