Primus – May 7th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

The list of bands that can pull off a full length remake of the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory soundtrack is a short one. Very short. And it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Primus is the band that did it, releasing Primus & The Chocolate Factory with The Fungi Ensemble last October. Last Thursday night, in the pouring rain, they brought the whole thing to Red Rocks, performing the album in it’s entirety along with a full set of original Primus songs.

Enslaved & Yob – March 14th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 2 min read

Amidst the drunkenness of LoDo following Denver’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, Enslaved, Yob, and Ecstatic Vision treated a sparse but dedicated crowd at Summit Music Hall. Despite an energetic set from headliners Enslaved, Yob stole this show with their three-song forty-five minute set, covering three out of the four songs from their latest record ‘Clearing the Path to Ascend.’

Icelantic’s Winter On The Rocks – January 30th – Red Rocks

Estimated read time 2 min read

Once a year, a sea of fans, clad from head to to in insulated coats, snow pants, and beanies, descends upon Red Rocks for the annual Winter on the Rocks, hosted by Denver based ski brand Icelantic. While retaining the perennial Hip-Hop vibe, this year’s offering leaned toward the Reggae end of the spectrum. With unseasonably warm temperatures the crowd was a bit less bundled up than last year, when the show was blessed with consistent snowfall. The venue was less than full, but the crowd was rowdy and upbeat all night.

Run the Jewels – November 18th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Hipsters and Hip-Hop kids alike quickly filled The Gothic last Tuesday night, and the room was mostly full for openers Despot (please release your album!) and Ratking. This crowd skewed closer to early twenties than the late thirties ages of headliner Run The Jewels’ El-P and Mike. This crowd was firedup, and well aware that they were about to witness one of the best shows of the year, Hip-Hop or otherwise.

The Afghan Whigs – October 29th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 2 min read

If the version of The Afghan Whigs that stopped into the Bluebird Theater last Wednesday night was supposed to be another half-assed attempt to reunite a band to its former glory, Greg Dulli and crew didn’t get the memo. It may be a mostly new lineup, but this band is tight, and Dulli prowled the stage with all of the swagger and snarl fans had come to expect in the band’s 90s heyday. If their latest album and this show are any indications, this is not the last we’ll hear of The Afghan Whigs.

Greensky Bluegrass – October 24th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 2 min read

Having ramped up the second half of their Fall tour in Des Moines early last week, Greensky Bluegrass rolled in to Denver on Friday for the first of two highly anticipated, and sold-out, shows. Despite the sold-out sign that hung on the box office window, The Ogden was nearly deserted before opener You, Me & Apollo took the stage. As the Denver bands set moved on, the room steadily filled and the buzz of excited fans grew in intensity until there was electricity crackling in the air just seconds before Greensky Bluegrass took the stage.

The War On Drugs – October 10th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Adam Granduciel (aka The War On Drugs) took the stage on Friday night before a packed house at The Ogden Theatre and dazzled the crowd with a set that included nearly every song on his stand-out recent release ‘Lost In The Dream.’ Not only did they recreate the layers and atmospheric sounds that are so pervasive on the record, but they pushed the songs to the limit with extended jams and Granduciel’s guitar solos.

Mastodon – May 5th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Mastodon is on the road for a month long tour leading up to the release of their sixth studio album, Once More ‘Round the Sun, due out June 24, and they have a stellar lineup of openers in Gojira and Kvelertak. While the crowd certainly leaned toward the Metal side of the spectrum, for good reason, Mastodon attracts a lot of folks who might not fancy themselves as metal fans, but certainly have an appreciation for aggressive music, and they were out in force for a sold-out Monday night show.
