High on Fire – August 8th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

High on Fire has paved the way for an endless list of bands including Mastodon (whose members met at a High on Fire show). Their latest studio effort, Luminiferous, will most certainly top many end-of-year lists, and their live shows are the the stuff of legends. So to say this was a highly anticipated show for many in attendance would be a severe understatement. High on Fire crushed it! It’s no surprise, really. The well of songs they have to pick from is deep. And damn near all of their songs translate well in a live setting.

Mastodon & Clutch – May 3rd – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

Mastodon and Clutch brought their “Missing Link” Tour into one of America’s most legendary venues, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, with special guests Graveyard and we were there to capture the metal hitting the rocks. Mastodon and Clutch share a longtime friendship as fans will recall that Clutch frontman Neil Fallon contributed vocals to “Blood And Thunder” (from Mastodon’s 2004’s Leviathan) so fans were thrilled when Fallon appeared at the tail-end of Mastodon’s show closing set for a thunderous version of their eleven year old collaboration.

Mastodon – May 5th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Mastodon is on the road for a month long tour leading up to the release of their sixth studio album, Once More ‘Round the Sun, due out June 24, and they have a stellar lineup of openers in Gojira and Kvelertak. While the crowd certainly leaned toward the Metal side of the spectrum, for good reason, Mastodon attracts a lot of folks who might not fancy themselves as metal fans, but certainly have an appreciation for aggressive music, and they were out in force for a sold-out Monday night show.

Like a spiky haired, tattooed tornado with it’s devil horned fingers held proudly high in the sky, the 2013 Mayhem Festival featuring Amon Amarth, Mastodon, 5 Finger Death Punch, and Rob Zombie on the main stage, roared it’s way through Denver’s Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater last weekend. The tornado left in it’s wake thousands of screaming, exhausted but happy fans.

Mastodon & Opeth – April 23rd – The Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 3 min read

Mastodon and Opeth rolled in to The Fillmore Auditorium last Monday on their co-headlining Heritage Hunter Tour. While Monday night is a tough slot for any band, I was surprised to see the huge venue less than half full for this show and wondered why the management had decided not to pull the curtain across behind the soundboard to give the room a more intimate feel.

Mastodon Tries To Take Time Off And Ends Up With New Album “The Hunter”

Estimated read time 3 min read

Mastodon has been revolutionizing the hard rock/prog-metal scene since their inception in the early 2000s. Melding deep conceptual and classic literary themes with heavy progressive riffs and intense drumming that shakes the ground like their namesake did millennia ago, they’ve created a world of their own, pushing the boundaries of themselves and their sound with each successive album.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Mastodon – Wednesday, November 9th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

Mastodon began formulating their own brand of highly-skilled hard rock over a decade ago when others were rehashing 80s metal, and went on to mastermind a string of complex concept albums while much of the music world was centered on making digestible singles.
