Estimated read time 2 min read

The Fillmore was awash in whiskey and weed as the Denver faithful eagerly awaited the cities first legal 4/20 celebration. Though this show wrapped up before the clock struck the first second of April 20th, anticipation was in the air as the Drive-By Truckers brought their own brand of Southern Rock and Roll to one of the biggest Front Range rooms they have played in a long time.

Russian Circles – March 1st – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

This was the perfect Russian Circles show for a newer fan or someone who hasn’t seen the band in years. With nothing more than stark white backlighting most of the night, the trio flawlessly worked their way through at least one song from each of their studio albums, stretching out enough to make their ten song song set last ninety minutes. There were no mosh pits, no shirtless fans, and few if any signs of the horns the entire night, but the band was met with great enthusiasm.

Fruition – February 21st – Cervantes’ Other Side

Estimated read time 2 min read

Portland Americanagrass rockers, Fruition posted up at The Other Side last Friday night for a WinterWondergrass warmup. After last fall’s opening slot on the Greensky Bluegrass Fall tour closing run at the Gothic, it’s no surprise Cervantes’ Other Side was packed. While many of them were most likely newer fans, many were singing along with the band on every song. The front of the room was full of energy, and the whole night had a great vibe.

Amon Amarth – February 11th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 3 min read

Sweden, Norway, and Athens, Ohio descended on Summit Music Hall last Tuesday for a stop on Amon Amarth’s seemingly endless ‘Deceiver of the Gods’ Tour. All three of the featured bands have a core following, and they were out in force at this show. It seemed like 80% of the room was adorned in a shirt from one of the bands, and all three bands were met with equal excitement as fans threw horns in the air, screamed lyrics, and broke out in mosh pits.

Greensky Bluegrass – November 15th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

It’s safe to say the secret is out about Greensky Bluegrass. Their days of playing small rooms is all but over, and everyone at the Gothic Theatre last Friday knew this might be the last time to catch this band in such an intimate venue. They may on a meteoric rise to the top of the Bluegrass world, but in the end they are just five friends from Michigan, gathered around a single microphone, playing the music that brought them together.

Queens Of The Stone Age – August 15th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 2 min read

Very few bands can take an audience on a ride like Queens of the Stone Age does. From the slugdy, Kyuss-inspired “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” opener to the late set “Sick, Sick, Sick,” this band covers every possible genre influence imaginable while also avoiding direct comparisons. The band leaned heavily on their most recent release for this set but they dug into nearly all of their albums during including multiple songs from Rated R, like “Feelgood Hit of the Summer,” an obvious nod to the legalization of Marijuana in Colorado.

Rhymesayers Entertainment, the Minneapolis independent Hip-Hop collective co-founded by Sean Daley (Slug) of Atmosphere in 1995, has built an incredible lineup of artists, a rabid fan base, and a hometown Hip-Hop scene that’s one of the best in the country. Last Friday night at The Ogden, with help from Carnage The Executioner and I Self Devine, Atmosphere proved yet again that they’re as relevant today as ever, and their live show is still one not to be missed.

Mastodon & Opeth – April 23rd – The Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 3 min read

Mastodon and Opeth rolled in to The Fillmore Auditorium last Monday on their co-headlining Heritage Hunter Tour. While Monday night is a tough slot for any band, I was surprised to see the huge venue less than half full for this show and wondered why the management had decided not to pull the curtain across behind the soundboard to give the room a more intimate feel.

If you have any doubt Mastodon is carrying the torch for metal music, look no further than one of their live shows.
