Buddy Guy – November 12th – Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 6 min read

A line of casually dressed baby boomers wrapped around the corner of 14th & Spruce Tuesday in anticipation of blues legend Buddy Guy at a near capacity Boulder Theater. It was Buddy’s second Colorado visit in three months and aside from swapping red rocks for salmon and turquoise walls, the show was quite a bit similar. It was night of beer drinking, gospel style audience affirmation, stories, and dirty overdriven blues.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Gary Clark Jr. – Ogden – Friday, October 11th

Estimated read time 1 min read

The only thing growing faster than Gary Clark Jr.’s acclaim — among fans, critics and iconic musicians alike — is the scope of his talents and tastes. It all comes very naturally to the young musician; a triple threat guitar-slinger, emotive singer and involving songwriter. His one-to-watch appearance at the White House command performance for the Obamas alongside Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy — prompted the Music Fan-in-Chief to remark, “He’s the future.”

We had the opportunity to sit down with Umphrey’s Keyboard player, Joel Cummins, late this summer to talk about the band’s new sUMmer school, their work with Huey Lewis, and, of course, their upcoming show at Red Rocks with Railroad Earth.

Blues monsters Buddy Guy and Robert Randolph stopped into the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield over Labor Day Weekend and put on a clinic of sorts for the picnicking patrons that spread out their blankets all over the lush grass. From the soulful and Gospel infused sounds of Randolph and his “Family Band,” to Guy’s machine gun licks and Muddy Waters stories, this was a great way to wind down the summer under the stars.

Jonny Lang – July 10th – The Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 4 min read

Last Tuesday night blues-rocker Jonny Lang brought out blues fans from several generations to a standing-room only Boulder Theater. He succeeded, if only for two and a half hours, in tricking the Tuesday night crowd into thinking it was Friday. His guitar playing, vocals, and stage presence conveyed the highs and lows of the blues to everyone who had the pleasure of being there. It’s no wonder Lang has received the praise of colleagues and guitar legends like Eric Clapton, and also Buddy Guy.
