In Haitian Creole “Soule Monde” translates to “smashed world,” which is exactly what will happen to yours when you hear this dynamic duo shatter conventional notions of Jazz, World-Beat, and Funk this Saturday at Cervantes’. Listen Up Denver! was curious as to how this group came to fruition and in chatting with Ray Paczkowski, a story began to emerge.

Fruition – April 13th – Cervantes’ Other Side

Estimated read time 4 min read

Being around at the beginning, before a band makes it big, is a desire shared by all music lovers and Colorado is no stranger to this phenomena. We’ve always been big believers that if you can make a name for yourself in Colorado then you can make it almost anywhere. With Fruition, we won’t know for sure until maybe a year from now, but last week they made a real case for themselves at Cervantes’ when they brought their West Coast Folk-Rock String Band sound to the Front Range for a three night stand.

Rodina – November 29th – Cervantes’ Other Side

We are still looking for reasons as to why the crowd wasn’t bigger at Cervantes’ Other Side for Rodina’s show last week. It was a Thursday night, Rodina is still making a footprint with its music, there was a big weekend of music ahead with moe. in town…the list goes on. While there were a handful of fresh faces in the crowd, the medium-sized audience wasn’t enough of a showing of gratitude for the awesome music Rodina cranked out all night.

Estimated read time 5 min read

When The New Mastersounds roll into town, the Funk fans come out of the woodwork and last weekend at Cervantes’ was no different when the band stopped in Denver and played both sides of the Welton street club. On Friday night The Ballroom was full, but not packed while on Saturday night The Other Side was like being in a washing machine during the Spin Cycle as everyone jostled together and spun each other around all night long as the energy seemed to keep climbing. It was mayhem, pure, blissful mayhem.

Burning Man – August 27 – September 3 – Black Rock City, NV

Estimated read time 9 min read

Burning Man is much more than just a temporary community. It’s a city in the desert dedicated to radical self reliance, radical self-expression, and art. Innovative sculpture, art installations, performance art, theme camps, art cars, and costumes all represent forms of artistic expression on the playa. Elements of the abstract and surreal are everywhere as long horned steers and cans of Spam rise from the desert floor that surround the Man and the Temple.

Westword Music Showcase – June 23rd – The Golden Triangle

Estimated read time 7 min read

The 18th annual Westword Music Showcase took over Denver’s Golden Triangle on the 23rd as 15 venues hosted hundreds of local and national bands in the 104 degree heat. On the blacktopped area in front of the main stage, people’s shoes sizzled in the sun and the music was as hot as the pavement. We sweated, smiled and danced to a wide array of sounds. The nationally touring acts on the main stage added power to the event, and the energy Girl Talk put out at the end of the night nearly surged the grid.
