Dance Party Time Machine – November 14th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

From the Delorean parked out front to Marc Brownstein performing the narration on “Thriller” as the show wound to a close, last Friday night’s long-anticipated Dance Party Time Machine was a major, bad-to-the-bone success. A vast majority of Denver’s local Jam, Rock, and Funk music scenes were represented, with musicians taking turns on-stage throughout the duration of the Dance Party’s 4-hour throw-down. Denverites should feel lucky to have such incredible performers, artists, and musicians living in our midst.

The Motet’s “Mixtape 1975” – November 1st – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Motet, the funkadelic Denver supergroup, played for a packed house this past Halloween weekend at the Ogden Theatre. The spooky tradition of covering an artist each Halloween weekend was broken last year when the band decided to play hits only from 1980 and this year they chose 1975. The show, dubbed appropriately “Mixtape 1975,” stayed true to the band’s Afrobeat heritage. As the band took the stage the buzz of the audience turned into raucous applause, eager for what was to come from this groovin’ group.

Phoenix On The Exclamation Point: It’s A Good Thing!

Estimated read time 5 min read

Denver knew Phoenix way back when. We have a history. The kind of history, upon reflection, that was described as “magical” and “iconic” when Listen Up Denver! sat down with Phoenix guitarist, Laurent Brancowitz. Considering the Michael Jackson dance party that erupted at the band’s first visit to Denver in 2009 touring for Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, it’s not much of an exaggeration. If the past encounters between Denver and Phoenix are any sign, their show at Red Rocks will find everyone dancing, no matter what.

Fitz and the Tantrums – June 14th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

A sea of people glimmered and gleamed in the overflowing Gothic Theatre last Friday for the dynamic indie-pop group, Fitz and the Tantrums. As packed as this sold out show was, no one pushed, no one shoved, and all awaited Fitz and his Tantrums anxiously; channeling their inner sardines, no one budged. The LA-based band flew through their Denver show without missing a beat; their dynamism ending with the same energy it began. Overall, the show was like a fantastic disco party.

Maceo Parker – February 22nd – Cervantes’ Ballroom

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last Friday Maceo Parker schooled a young crowd at Cervantes’ as he funked his way through a 50 year career that has featured stints with everyone from James Brown to Prince. After a blistering set from Colorado-by-way-of-Iowa local boys, Euforquestra, Parker took to the stage in dark sunglasses and grinned from ear to ear as he demonstrated his musical aptitude on sax, vocals, and even jazz flute. Maceo and his band moved the room in and out of Funk, Smooth Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Soul until the clock struck two.

Walk The Moon – November 28th – The Bluebird

Estimated read time 3 min read

Last Wednesday, the Cincinnati foursome Walk The Moon took the stage at The Bluebird in front of a packed house. Though the young audience reeked of over applied cologne and perfume, they shook their asses and threw their hands in the air to the percussive rhythms and tight harmonies. As the band hopped between their two albums all night, they showcased their hits and even had the time to slip in a classic cover in the encore slot.

The Smashing Pumpkins – October 16th – 1stBank Center

Estimated read time 5 min read

The current incarnation of Billy Corgan’s Smashing Pumpkins took the stage last week in a shrunken 1stBank Center looking very much like they did back in their heyday. Despite the band being made up of new supporting cast behind Corgan, there is still a sexy female bass player and a guitarist with Asian features. While at first the similarities to the classic line-up seemed a bit cheesy, their playing pushed all those thoughts from our minds immediately as the band delivered a very solid show of new and old material.

The Motet – December 31st – The Aggie Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

An eager, party hungry, crowd gathered at The Aggie Theater Saturday evening to celebrate the end of 2011 with one of the most revered bands in Colorado music today, The Motet. The rang in the New Year with a lengthy set, clocking in at well over 2 hours, and they only cut the music a few times, instead opting to melt peoples brains with mind bending transitions. Quite simply this was one of best jam and free form concerts we’ve witnessed. To the Motet, we raise our glasses once again! Happy New Year!
