PICK OF THE WEEK: Lotus – Fillmore Auditorium – Friday & Saturday, February 7th & 8th

Estimated read time 1 min read

Lotus originally played as a Jamband that leaned heavily on the sounds of Funk, Rock and Jazz but with improvisational styles that’ll take you by surprise and make you wonder why Lotus hasn’t been involved in your life sooner, the band’s style has gravitated toward elements of the electronic genre while maintaining the foundation of Jamrock.

New Jersey FolkGrass titans Railroad Earth returned to Colorado this past weekend for a pair of shows at The Fillmore Auditorium. The shows, the first since they dazzled a soggy Red Rocks crowd this past summer with a marathon show that will go down in Hobo lore, were in celebration of their brand new album ‘The Last of The Outlaws’ and what a party it was!

Umphrey’s McGee – December 29th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 5 min read

Despite the frigid temperatures outside, last Sunday night never had a chance to cool down as Umphrey’s McGee gave Denver one of the most memorable nights of 2013, just in time. With two terrifically special and totally shocking guest appearances, the band had a stage presence conceivable only to those lucky enough to witness it. The music started early to an enthusiastic crowd in the midst of their New Year’s Run. Anticipation was high, the sound was immaculate and the light show was wild.

John Fogerty – October 15th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 3 min read

The ambiance at The Fillmore for last Tuesday’s “An Evening with John Fogerty” was much calmer than usual with a crowd who was relaxed and seated, in actual chairs, on the floor. Though the audience may have been laid-back, the music was not, and Fogerty got his tame yet loyal crowd hyped up on their trip down memory lane. With a 2-hour performance that covered the old, the new and the unpredictable, we can come to one conclusion: Good Golly, he’s still got it.

Alt-J – September 5th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 2 min read

By the time Alt-J took the stage at the sold-out Fillmore Auditorium for their much anticipated return to Denver, the heat in the venue had soaked shirts with sweat and there was no hope of moving gracefully across the massive floor packed with twenty-somethings. As the band ran through all the favorites from ‘An Awesome Wave,’ the crowd moved, hands outstretched, to the buzz of the electronic bassline all night. If these guys can continue to produce good music you can be assured they’ll be playing somewhere even bigger next time.

The Motet – April 20th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 6 min read

Every year in Colorado, April 20 really does feel like a holiday. But this year, with the passage of Amendment 64 last fall, Coloradoans were craving that Rocky Mountain High more than ever. Colfax was packed early in the day, and it definitely seemed like something strange was in the air. For the funky dance band known for its sold-out, psychedelic Halloween shows, the weirdness in the air last Saturday could have resembled one of those late October shows The Motet has been putting on for about a decade.

STS9 – December 29th – Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 5 min read

The five-man Jamtronic crew known as STS9 took the stage at The Fillmore on the 29th for the first of three shows leading up to a New Year’s Eve extravaganza and manned their jam battle stations in front of a Mayan pyramid. STS9’s 3 night New Years runs have become a welcome tradition in the Colorado music scene and their devoted followers, like many in the jam band community, understand how to have one hell of a time but also know how to temper the excitement for night one of three with the sense that the best is yet to come.

Deftones – October 19th – The Fillmore Auditorium

Estimated read time 6 min read

On Friday night, Denver welcomed the Deftones and Scars on Broadway to the Fillmore Auditorium for an evening filled with loud guitars, emotional intensity, and charismatic frontmen. The most concise description for the Fillmore’s atmosphere was “dark,” in more ways than one – the dimly-lit ballroom, the dark-colored attire of many fans, the deep shades of blue lighting during the Deftones performance, and the dark themes and characteristics of the music itself.

Dark Star Orchestra – October 8th – The Fillmore

Estimated read time 5 min read

Dark Star Orchestra faced the daunting task of playing Denver on the heels of a sold-out run of Furthur shows at Red Rocks but from the first notes of “Shakedown Street” to the last notes of “Brokedown Palace” they proved they were up to the challenge. They got the modest crowd dancing as they showed us an energy and “oneness” on stage that prove they have the best parts of Grateful Dead vibe down pat.
