Rocky Mountain Folks Fest – August 18, 19, 20 – Planet Bluegrass, Lyons, CO

Estimated read time 8 min read

Sure this festival is about music, but more than that it’s about the community that surrounds the music as performers stand in line alongside fans for a bowl of Sister’s Dumplings, hard fought for tarp dash numbers are graciously given away to unsuspecting families, and strangers look out for each other on the slippery river rocks. For three days each August the real world melts away as we join the rest of the Folks on Planet Bluegrass.

Guns N’ Roses – August 2nd – Sports Authority Field at Mile High

Estimated read time 5 min read

Wednesday night at Mile High there was an interesting mix of long term G N’ R fans, middle aged music fans and suburbanites dressed for a night on the town. Watching these guys, who once defined American 80’s rock and roll excess, it is hard to imagine they’re in their 50’s. While they may not still be writing anthems like Paradise City or Welcome To The Jungle, they sure can perform them and delight their fans with a true rock and roll show.

Estimated read time 3 min read

Over the course of the night last Tuesday, Les Claypool showcased why he is one of the most innovative and creative bass players in the world. After a 75 minute from the weird and wonderful Claypool Lennon Delirium, Primus delivered a varied setlist that showcased crowd pleasers like “My Name Is Mud,” “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” and “Jerry Was a Racecar Driver” alongside some deeper cuts and even the live debut of a brand new song called “Seven.” The crowd got a little bit of everything, and it was glorious.

Gov’t Mule & moe. – August 25th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last Thursday’s late-summer evening with Gov’t Mule, moe. and Blackberry Smoke was a highly anticipated date on the Red Rocks calendar. As fans arrived, the more overtly branded Mule fans heavily populated the crowd. Not to be discounted: moe.’s summer tour has been choked full of great performances and wild energy so there was plenty of anticipation in the venue for the New York rockers that split the bill.

The String Cheese Incident – Sunday, July 17 – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

It was a great afternoon for some Cheese on the Rocks. The golden summer sun slanted down from the west with no hint of rain, and a cool breeze swept over the storied amphitheater. The whole of Red Rocks had a backyard barbeque vibe; someone even brought potato salad. Adding to the BBQ vibe, Colorado’s own bluegrass masters Hot Rize came out with SCI for what they dubbed “Hot Cheese Rizing.”

Estimated read time 2 min read

‘Burnt Offering,’ the new album from The Budos Band, is a wild, booze-fueled ride of hazy riffs, take-no-prisoners horn lines and relentless percussion that summons the occult – an evolved sound for this mighty 10-piece band sparked by their love of Black Sabbath and Pentagram. Tame Impala – May 30th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Young hipsters and Rock nerds meshed well at the Ogden this past Saturday night to honor psychedelic rock band, Tame Impala. Although many were clad in black band tees, there was a sea of brightness, dyed hair and funky neon glasses. All 1,600 people were ready to become a part of the magical mysticism that is Tame Impala live. The band is without a doubt Pink Floyd of the 21st century. It doesn’t seem like they are a band that is trying to be a legendary, psychedelic rock band. They simply are one.
