  • Ahh 4/20 in Colorado, you can smell it in the air! With the recent passing of Amendment 64 Colorado has become a hot spot for all things "4/20 friendly" and this past weekend was a prime example. From the first ever Cannabis Cup hosted on U.S. soil, to Snoop Lion’s performance Friday night, to this amazing line up; Colorado has taken their stance on recreational Marijuana use and the word is out. Last Saturday there was no better place to be than Red Rocks as Slightly Stoopid and Cypress Hill took to the stage to celebrate what appears to be our new state holiday.

  • Nothing goes better with good southern barbeque than good southern music. Well, maybe whiskey too. But whiskey make you do funny thangs and in showman Robby Peoples case funny, awesome thangs. On a cold, drizzly night in Colorado, in a dimly lit, hot and sweaty dancehall at the back of a barbeque joint, Peoples and his band brought a little Mississippi heat and Listen Up Denver! was there to soak it up.

  • Every year in Colorado, April 20 really does feel like a holiday. But this year, with the passage of Amendment 64 last fall, Coloradoans were craving that Rocky Mountain High more than ever. Colfax was packed early in the day, and it definitely seemed like something strange was in the air. For the funky dance band known for its sold-out, psychedelic Halloween shows, the weirdness in the air last Saturday could have resembled one of those late October shows The Motet has been putting on for about a decade.

  • While the Boulder Theater was not packed for the Drive-By Truckers two-night run any newcomer could see that the band has a very dedicated fan base as most folks sang along with every word the Country Rockers cranked out. While Patterson Hood remained a center of attention with soaring guitar solos and his roaring voice and Mike Cooley countrified things a bit with some steady finger-picking and vocals reminiscent of Johnny Cash or Merle Haggard, the newest member, bassist Matt Patton, seemed to be having the most fun.

  • Being around at the beginning, before a band makes it big, is a desire shared by all music lovers and Colorado is no stranger to this phenomena. We've always been big believers that if you can make a name for yourself in Colorado then you can make it almost anywhere. With Fruition, we won't know for sure until maybe a year from now, but last week they made a real case for themselves at Cervantes' when they brought their West Coast Folk-Rock String Band sound to the Front Range for a three night stand.

  • Last weekend The Greyboy Allstars came straight out of the 70's on a groove of Funk, Soul, and Jazz. The band was in town supporting their new album, 'Inland Emperor,' which dropped this week, and the crowd filled in fast and early at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom on both Friday and Saturday nights. Supported by Dumpstaphunk on Friday night and Denver’s own The Congress on Saturday, it was a weekend of unforgettable music, and luckily all three bands have new albums out to keep the party going.

  • Years ago a seed was planted on a mountain next to a river and into the collective consciousness of music freaks. It was watered regularly, eventually taking root and each year since it has grown, budded and left all of those aware with an even bigger Sonic Bloom than the last. As the winter comes to its end, and the spring does what it has to do, there is a buzz forming while the pollen spreads and last Friday the first Sonic Bloom pre-party transported a packed Cervantes' to another world.
