Broken Social Scene – October 5th – Summit Music Hall

Estimated read time 6 min read

Broken Social Scene always seemed more like an idea than a traditional band. The Canadian collective was established as a gathering of like-minded artists in Toronto with a laissez-faire philosophy. The various “members” of the group were free to come as they were, when they wanted, and leave the same way. And it worked. For the first half of the first decade of the 21st century, the unofficial leader of this “scene,” Kevin Drew, brought together no fewer than twenty musicians to release three Indie Rock albums considered canon.

tUnE-yArDs – May 28th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

One would expect to find a Burning Man centered universe amid the feather boas and body odor last Wednesday night. In fact, this world was not the middle of the desert but the Gothic Theatre for none other than Tribal Electro-Pop band tUnE-yArDs and opener up-and-coming Sylvan Esso. The coupling of these two acts on a still Colorado night set a very high bar for approaching summer shows.

Bon Iver – May 31st – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

Last Thursday night Bon Iver took over Red Rocks and Justin Vernon proved that there may be no better venue on the planet for him to work his magic as he whisked us all away to that eerily special place that only his voice can conjure up. The crowd swooned as the unshaven Vernon’s voice reverberated off the rocks that towered on each side of the amphitheater and his nine piece band fleshed out the sound with guitars, strings, horns, keys, and booming drums. It was truly a magical night on the rocks.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Bon Iver – Red Rocks – May 31st

Estimated read time 2 min read

Justin Vernon, AKA Bon Iver, has built up a very impressive fan base in the last 3 or 4 years with a hushed Alt-Folk catalog that has earned him praise in many music magazines, and even some good hearted ribbing on Saturday Night Live courtesty of Justin Timberlake. His last gig in Denver was a headlining show at The Ogden, and this week he will be headlining Red Rocks after playing several high profile gigs at festivals like Coachella and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
