Despite the Christmas parties that were raging all over town and a number of good shows packing venues on Colfax and beyond, the 1up-Colfax drew a solid crowd on Saturday night when North American Scum took the stage to perform two sets of LCD Soundsystem . The crowd was an eclectic mix of regulars, hippies, hipsters and 30 somethings looking to spend a few hours with the music of a band that called it quits at the height of their career. There’s no doubt that those who made it out for this were glad they did.
From the moment the set started with the eerie, toy piano like sounds of “Brain In a Fishtank,” the opening track of Shpongle’s most recent album Museum of Consciousness, it was clear this show was going to be something special. The energy that was radiating through the crowd was nothing short of magical and everyone were bound together in the cool damp confines of one of the most spectacular venues on earth to witness the kind of spectacle that legends are made of.
Alt-J roared into The Bluebird Theater last Tuesday for their first performance in the Mile High City. Fresh off two solid sets at Coachella, Alt –J decided to close out their first U.S tour in Denver. Everyone in the building seemed to have a different favorite track they were dying to hear. Throughout the night a sold-out crowd was treated to An Awesome Wave and several breathtaking covers that left the room stunned and extremely appreciative of this British quartet’s incredible talent.
Justin Vernon, AKA Bon Iver, has built up a very impressive fan base in the last 3 or 4 years with a hushed Alt-Folk catalog that has earned him praise in many music magazines, and even some good hearted ribbing on Saturday Night Live courtesty of Justin Timberlake. His last gig in Denver was a headlining show at The Ogden, and this week he will be headlining Red Rocks after playing several high profile gigs at festivals like Coachella and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
As everyone knows, a festival like Coachella can be a bit chaotic as you struggle to keep track of your friends while trying to see all the bands you have circled on the schedule. Reviewing a Festival like this can be a tall task, so we’ve taken a new approach this time around, hope this review gives you a bit of that Festival Buzz.
