On Sunday night Baur’s Listening Lounge was full of fans and music professionals who hung on every amazing riff and phrase offered up by these excellent players. Most of the on-air staff of KUVO was there and Ms. Susan Garschet Reese who hosts the show “Take Note” from 1-4pm weekdays introduced Ms. Catherine Russell and her band who performed a set lovingly and thoughtfully culled from recordings of the golden age of Jazz and Blues. It was yet another magical night at Baur’s Listening Lounge.

A powerful vocalist and impeccable performer, Catherine Russell has performed with such prominent performers as David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Levon Helm and Paul Simon to name a few. She has been celebrated as NPR radio’s top 5 jazz CD’s of 2006 and most recently in 2012, she was the recipient of a Grammy Award for her appearance as a featured artist on the soundtrack for the HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire.

Sunday was the very first time that Baur’s Listening Lounge opened it’s doors to the public and, all things considered, it was a smashing success. The venue is housed in a historic Denver building and the team has gone to great lengths to ensure that the old flavor of the building remains. If this inaugural performance was any indication, we have a very special new venue in town that will be bringing some incredible musicians into an intimate and historically significant space in our city.

This isn’t another Rock club, concert hall or amphitheater; it’s a very special “Listening Lounge” that aims to break the mold of traditional music venues in several ways and the music loving community in this town would be foolish not to embrace such a unique and consumer focused venue with open ears.
