Dirty Dawgs – November 16th – Quixote’s True Blue

Estimated read time 9 min read

Moments before jam super-group Dirty Dawgs took the stage on Friday night at the new Quixotes’, we found out from a friend that Ray White (of Frank Zappa fame) was in the house and would be sitting in throughout the night. Ray White sitting in with a super-group composed of Michael Kang, Steve Molitz, Eric Gould, and Brandon Draper in the main room, and The Grant Farm in the bar? It had all the hallmarks of a crazy night and lived up to the billing!

Kyle Hollingsworth Band & John Brown’s Body – November 3rd – The Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last Saturday night, The Boulder Theatre was a cozy hangout for not only young men and women who go to school in Boulder, but also for a steady stream of young adults from Denver and middle-aged folks from the foothills, all there to bounce along to the hypnotic beats from John Brown’s Body or to catch the latest music from longtime Boulder resident Kyle Hollingsworth.

The Motet Plays Parliament-Funkadelic – October 27th – The Ogden

Estimated read time 5 min read

The Motet’s annual “musical costume” shows on Halloween have become something of an institution here on the Front Range with folks buying tickets early in the summer to make sure they don’t miss out on the madness. This year’s run kicked off on the 25th, stopped in Denver for two nights at The Ogden before heading up to Vail and finally wrapping up last night in Boulder. When all was said and done it was a fun and funky show and while it didn’t top “Funk Is Dead,” everyone in the room had smiles on their faces to the bitter end.

Greensky Bluegrass – October 20th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Bluebird was packed this past weekend for night two of Greensky Bluegrass. From dready to dapper, people danced and stared as Greensky blew the minds of their home-away from home-town crowd. These guys bring tight vocal harmonies and well thought-out lyrics to an often silly or sloppy Jamgrass scene and their fans love them for it. From covers of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Stanley Brothers, to fantastic original tunes, this was one for the ages.

String Cheese Incident – July 6th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Well if you haven’t heard by now, let us be the first to tell you . . . Friday night at Red Rocks was WET! Early in String Cheese Incident’s first set, a storm that had been threatening for a while descended on the venue. The bathrooms (and anywhere else with a roof for that matter) were packed with sodden fans, and people huddled together in beer tents and under just about any overhang they could find as water fell from the sky in sheets as they waited for what turned out to be a stellar show from the band for nearly two hours.

String Cheese Incident – July 5th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

When String Cheese takes over Red Rocks for a run of shows it’s always a party and last night was no different. It took the stands a while to feel crowded, but slowly but surely the freaks filtered in and by 7:30 the air was buzzing with anticipation. Though it looked like only three quarters of the tickets were sold for the first night of this summer’s three night run, the boys didn’t hold back and really brought it right out of the gates. Get ready for night two . . . the boys are on fire!!!

PICK OF THE WEEK: String Cheese Incident – Red Rocks – July 5, 6, 7

Estimated read time 1 min read

String Cheese Incident has not played Red Rocks since the venue was host to their comeback run two years ago and that should be reason enough to catch at least one of their shows this weekend at the legendary amphitheater. But, if it’s not, consider their epic electronica laced jams, their blistering bluegrass, and the incomparable energy of a weekend of incidents on the rocks.
