Polytoxic’s Last Waltz Revisited VIII – November 21st – The Ogden

Estimated read time 7 min read

Polytoxic’s Annual Last Waltz Revisited is a Denver Thanksgiving tradition that was especially tasty this year. The Ogden was sold-out and filled with an energy that pulsed with love for the music of The Band on Thanksgiving Eve as four generations of audience members sang along to songs that have become ingrained in the fabric of our lives. Parents put their arms around their children, friends hugged each other in the middle of songs and people felt some of their favorite music in a way few get to experience.

Little Feat’s Paul Barrere Talks Feat Past and Present

Estimated read time 11 min read

Little Feat is a band that has been in the trenches of Rock and Roll since the revolution began. In 1969, Frank Zappa suggested Lowel George leave The Mothers of Invention and form his own band, and that same year George formed Little Feat with the goal of combining Blues, Funk, Country, Folk, Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll. Listen Up Denver! had the honor of catching up with Little Feat’s Paul Barrere while he was in a hotel in New York, and we talked Feat past and present.

Rocky Mountain Folks Festival – August 17th, 18th, 19th – Planet Bluegrass Ranch, Lyons, CO

Estimated read time 13 min read

I think it’s become a goal of the team up at Planet Bluegrass to out-do themselves from year to year with the line-up of the Folks Festival. While last year featured headliners Jackson Browne, The Weir Robinson Greene Trio, and Brandi Carlile, this year brought Iron & Wine, Amos Lee, and Lyle Lovett to the intimate stage by the river in Lyons and each one mesmerized and surprised as they entertained the sold-out crowd.

Levon Helm Tribute – June 2nd – The Mountain Jam Festival

Estimated read time 8 min read

“As I looked at all of the members of The Levon Helm Band when they lined up at the end of the night, I saw a band in transition and a family in mourning. I saw a group of extremely talented musicians who are willing to do whatever it takes to get through this, and to keep Levon’s legacy going strong. The pain of Levon’s death is still etched deeply in the hearts of many, and will continue to be for a long time, but the joy his music creates is just as powerful.”

20 Questions With MTHDS

Estimated read time 4 min read

Denver’s MTHDS are reviving their Beastie Boys tribute show this week in honor of Adam “MCA” Yauch who passed away in early May and they took some time to answer our “20 Questions” as they prepped for the show. One read through this exchange and you’ll get a feel for what a witty, sarcastic bunch of guys that make up this group. From comparing themselves to The Partridge Family to claiming that John Denver is one of the best local bands on the scene right now, it’s clear that one of the only these guys take seriously is their music.

Levon Helm’s Birthday Ramble – May 26th – The Barn, Woodstock

Estimated read time 4 min read

This past Saturday, May 26th 2012, would have been Levon Helm’s 72nd birthday and people came together to celebrate the occasion with mixed emotions, yet ready to raise their hearts, voices, and spirits into the rafters of “The Barn” that Levon built. Cars were lined up on Plochman Lane hours before fans were let on to the property, and there was a feeling of joy and loss that combined into an emotional force that hung in the air the entire night. It felt like celebrating Thanksgiving shortly after the passing of the man who sat at the head of the table.

Anders Osborne – May 18th – The Bluebird

Estimated read time 3 min read

Anders Osborne roared into The Bluebird on Friday night and delivered a performance that more than lived up to the hype. His commanding stage presence and exemplary musicianship is at a level that only comes from decades of road wear and tear. This was not Anders Osborne’s first barn-burning performance by any stretch, and when it was all over, he still had a pocket full of matches. Take our word for it and do not miss this man the next time he comes to town!

Trampled By Turtles – May 18th – The Ogden

Estimated read time 4 min read

The mid-western transplants came out in droves Friday night to see Trampled by Turtles (TBT) at The Ogden. The Duluth based folk-bluegrass band is touring on their new album, “Stars and Satellites” and the sold-out crowd sported their Minnesota Twins hats, overalls, and plaid – lots and lots of plaid. The beer lines were long, and the crowd had a nice buzz before the opener even hit the stage. The atmosphere had a collective excitement about it you only find at Friday night shows and the band delivered raging and precisely played show.

Joe Pug & The Lumineers – May 12th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

When all was said and done, The Lumineers, Joe Pug, and Bailiff turned in a fantastic night of music at The Bluebird last Saturday. From early in the night, The Bluebird was packed with a wide variety of music fans. There were grey hairs who looked a little overwhelmed at the size, and density, of the crowd, hipsters doing their best to look as cool as possible, industry folks, a few hippies blowing smoke at the ceiling, and a healthy number of late 20 and 30 something couples out for a musical date night. It’s safe to say that everyone went home happy.
