Listen Up Denver! presents JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound “Artist Spotlight.” Spend some time with JC Brooks and his band “The Uptown Sound” as they deliver a smoking performance at The Larimer Lounge, talk about their new record Howl, their influences, and of course how the whole thing got started! These guys present soul music by children of the post-punk era. Fox Street Allstars (CD Release Party) – March 2nd – Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 6 min read

The Larimer Lounge is a dive bar, pure and simple; it’s a little out of the way, wires hang from the low ceiling, and the walls are plastered with simple posters for upcoming shows, but last Saturday it was transformed into a Southern Juke Joint when Fox Street Allstars threw the album release party for their sophomore album Tough Talk. The sounds of R&B, Funk, and gritty, Whiskey soaked Rock-n-Roll spilled out on the street all night as the temperature inside climbed and bodies rubbed together on the dancefloor.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Fox Street Allstars (Album Release) – The Larimer Lounge – March 2nd

Estimated read time 2 min read

Make no mistake, the Fox Street Allstars reek of the roadhouses and West Texas honky-tonks of the Deep South that inspired their signature sound. The band brings an all-out-party to every show by pouring their hearts and souls into every note. No one really has any idea where front man Jonathan “Skippy” Huvard channels his soulful, whiskey soaked vocals and frenetic stage presence but the result is a blistering powerhouse of sound.

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – October 10th – The Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 5 min read

Last week, the Chicago Soul powerhouse of JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound rolled into The Larimer Lounge for the second time this year and while this show didn’t pack quite the punch of their April throw-down, it did showcase Brooks’ amazing stage presence and vocal prowess as the group plowed through a 90 minute set for a modest school night crowd. The band seamlessly segued from banging dance numbers to soulful slow jams and Brooks never slowed the constant patter of witty and fast paced banter between songs.

The Devil Makes Three – October 6th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

The last time The Devil Makes Three came through Denver they sold-out the relatively tiny Larimer Lounge and this time around, despite the unseasonably cold temperatures outside, the Bluebird Theatre was packed to the rafters. Energy was coursing through the room as this rowdy Saturday night crowd showed they were ready for some high energy Gypsy-Blues-Punk.

The Devil Makes Three – The Wakarusa Interview

Estimated read time 5 min read

The Devil Makes Three is currently touring in support of their newest LP, Stomp and Smash; a live release recorded over two sold out nights in Petaluma, CA and they give new meaning to the phrase “tour machine.” They played Wakarusa in the middle of a national tour with Flogging Molly and dates with Gogol Bordello before heading to Bonnaroo. Despite their busy schedule they took some time to talk to us at Listen Up Denver! about their music, touring, and what flavor of ice cream Wakarusa would be.

Joe Pug & The Lumineers – May 12th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

When all was said and done, The Lumineers, Joe Pug, and Bailiff turned in a fantastic night of music at The Bluebird last Saturday. From early in the night, The Bluebird was packed with a wide variety of music fans. There were grey hairs who looked a little overwhelmed at the size, and density, of the crowd, hipsters doing their best to look as cool as possible, industry folks, a few hippies blowing smoke at the ceiling, and a healthy number of late 20 and 30 something couples out for a musical date night. It’s safe to say that everyone went home happy.

Split Lip Rayfield Talks Wakarusa And The Split Livers

Split Lip Rayfield is often described as a mix of bluegrass and country with an accent of metal. No other band delivers the experience of the homemade gas-tank bass, mandolin, and banjo. Together, these three men burn up speakers and stages alike as they tour and play music for the fan faithful. Mando player Wayne Gottstine recently took some time to share with us at Listen Up Denver! about the documentary Never Make it Home, The Split Livers, Wakarusa, and why we should come out and see them this weekend.

Cherub – April 13th – The Larimer Lounge

Estimated read time 5 min read

Cherub may hail from Nashville, but they have a massive amount of love streaming out of the Front Range since they are signed to Boulder’s own Elm & Oak Records. They may not have been headlining, but it was rather obvious that a good amount of the crowd was there to see them. When they took the stage a little after 10, the room was crowded with what looked like little to no dance room but as they got going, things started to loosen up a bit until the dance floor was a rowdy, sweaty throng of bodies.
