Estimated read time 1 min read

The last time The Devil Makes Three came through Denver they sold-out the relatively tiny Larimer Lounge and this time around, despite the unseasonably cold temperatures outside, the Bluebird Theatre was packed to the rafters. Energy was coursing through the room as this rowdy Saturday night crowd showed they were ready for some high energy Gypsy-Blues-Punk.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Greensky Bluegrass – The Bluebird & The Fox – October 18th, 19th & 20th

Estimated read time 2 min read

While Greensky Bluegrass is “technically” a Bluegrass band, what makes them more than just a Bluegrass band? Great covers? Poignant rural ballads about real people? Dobro tone that Jerry (Douglas or Garcia) would love? Distortion Pedals? Grit and attitude from a Whiskey soaked card game? Rock-n-Roll vibe? Indeed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Little Feat – September 13th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

The Bluebird was an interesting mix of aging hippies, buttoned up 50 somethings out for a rare show, and Jamband kids checking one off the “Legends List” last Thursday night. Little Feat is one of the true legendary jambands of all time and they proved it yet again as they delivered a high energy two hour set that wove in and out of classic originals, fresh new tunes, and even a choice cover. They may not be playing the big sheds anymore, but they are clearly loving what they do and they are still doing it damn well.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit – August 28th – The Bluebird

Estimated read time 5 min read

Over the last several years Jason Isbell has been a busy man, touring regularly and releasing a pair of albums. Despite the departure of his lead guitarist Browan Lollar, all that writing effort and saddle time was evident last Tuesday when the band came out as a tight cohesive unit from the first lick and didn’t back off until they finished the show that featured a nice mix of his new material and tunes he wrote with the the Drive-By Truckers. Simply put, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are the real deal.

Michael Kiwanuka – August 7th – The Bluebird

Estimated read time 5 min read

Michael Kiwanuka may not be a name you are familiar with, or you may have just heard your friends rave about his show at The Bluebird last week, but once his music hits your ears, you won’t forget the name of this British musician with African roots. When Kiwanuka strummed the final note of a song, the audience gave a polite pause to make sure he was done, and then whistled, cheered and clapped at a volume we didn’t expect for a Tuesday night show.

Monophonics – July 19th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

For a Thursday night, or any night really, The Bluebird was sadly pretty empty when San Francisco’s Monophonics rolled into town last week. What that left those of us lucky enough to have made the right decision and hit the show, was plenty of dancing room, and boy, did we need it. Our guess is next time these boys come to town, they will draw a much bigger crowd as it is only a matter of time before word gets around that Monophonics is the real deal on the Funk scene.

DJ Logic – June 29th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

The DJ Logic show at The Bluebird Theatre last Friday had all the elements of a near perfect night in the Denver music scene. There was enough room to dance, the energy was through the roof, and the spontaneous and tight jamming that fueled the party was mind boggling. The creative juices flowing from the stage soaked the audience as the room pulsated with beats straight from the turntable and improvisational sounds straight from the gut. What would have made this near perfect night perfect? If they had played till the break of day.
