The Staves – June 11th – The Hi-Dive

Estimated read time 4 min read

In most cases, a band with siblings merely plays out as an interesting footnote to a band’s biography, save for the instance where one sibling is trying to stab the other, or if plums are being thrown. Luckily, no disgruntled fruit was spotted anywhere near the Hi-Dive last Tuesday when The Staves made their first appearance in Denver to play most of their debut album, ‘Dead & Born & Grown.’ Their completely and utterly seamless vocals and self-deprecating humor endeared them to the small but appreciative audience very quickly.

Estimated read time 5 min read

The Hi-Dive has always been one of the go-to venues in Denver for independent music, and the South Broadway staple continues to live up to it’s reputation. Hipster girls in sweaters and glasses a bit too big for their faces shuffled their slouched boots across the well worn floor while plaid shirt wearing boys rocked out to the sometimes heavy sounds of a couple of Denver’s best Indie bands, and a couple that you definitely will be hearing more about.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Midtown Dickens Performs “Only Brother”

Estimated read time 2 min read

Midtown Dickens uses traditional instruments to pull the history out of the Southern soil on which they were formed, and spread the seeds of roots music all over the country. All of the band’s members grew up in North Carolina and their roots run deep having absorbed music from family, friends, and Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. The instruments may be traditional, but the collective world view of the band and the way the music is being presented is not. Listen Up Denver!….this is Midtown Dickens.
