New Sounds of Old: A Glimpse of Dragondeer’s “Weird Space”

Estimated read time 10 min read

Eric Halborg is certainly no stranger to the Denver music scene. For the past ten plus years his band The Swayback has been defying expectations and genre classifications. When an opportunity arose for Halborg to do something different he dove into the new project that would become Dragondeer with the same eclectic zeal that The Swayback has championed for years. From a basement on Broadway to the stages of Red Rocks and South By Southwest, in two years the Blues group has exploded in popularity.

Futurebirds & Ark Life – January 18th – Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Twenty and thirtysomethings filled the Bluebird Theatre last Saturday evening for a rowdy night with Athens, Georgia alt-country/indie-rock band Futurebirds and opener Ark Life. Talking loudly over beers fans were out with high spirits and came to get loose. Despite very few moments of distinguishable vocals through the ear-bleeding guitar during Futurebirds set, it was sometimes hard to tell what songs were being played but the enthusiastic crowd, energetic performance and howl of the pedal steel alone made the evening.

Fox Street – January 10th – Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Bluebird was a who’s who of the Denver music scene when one of the best young bands on the scene made their headlining debut. There were members of The Congress, Recovery Act, Kinetix, The Whales, YAMN and more chatting with friends and enjoying a night out where they weren’t the featured act on stage. Instead, this night was all about Fox Street and their rough and tumble brand of Funky Rock & Soul. It was a historic performance for Fox Street. Here’s to next year’s Whiskey Social!

The Black Crowes – November 11th – Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 6 min read

There weren’t a lot of eighteen to twenty-five year olds crammed into the Boulder Theater on Monday night, but then again The Black Crowes have been around longer than most of those kids have. No, The Crowes attract a pretty specific crowd: twenty-five to forty-five in groups of couples or bros who like their Rock & Roll loud and visceral. No Day-Glo or glow-sticks or light up glasses, just a sea of faded dungarees, plaid, tall boots and short skirts with tights. The last generation of Rock & Roll.

Stir Fried Be On Key: A Story Fifteen (Or So) Years In The Making

Estimated read time 11 min read

It is truly cosmic when two stories unfold parallel to one another; pulsing and glowing like two universes swimming side by side in this vast multi-verse we call life. When they touch: Bang! A new universe is created, one in which both entities lock into a cosmic groove and never let go. This is the relationship between the band Stir Fried and the Bianchi brothers of Quixote’s and Sancho’s fame. Now, yet another music venue can be added to that list, The Donkey OT, where Stir Fried will help to kick off the Grand Opening this weekend!

In this day and age it’s not very often that you get to ride on a coal fired, steam powered train through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Galactic – February 16th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Galactic was the main attraction last Saturday at The Ogden, but opener Monophonics drew a hell of crowd and won over a legion of new fans. Once feet started moving they didn’t stop as these two powerhouse bands hit us with a one-two punch that made our legs quiver, and our ears ring. We were floored by the Funk, swept away by the Soul, and ravaged by the Rock…but we stood firm as the full force gale stormed from the stage.
