On the eve of New Year’s Eve, Yonder Mountain String Band sold-out a benefit concert for flood-ravaged Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, Colorado. For weeks there had been desperate attempts made for those who hadn’t been quick enough in buying tickets, so expectations were unusually high. While Kinfolk up and down the Front Range had been looking forward to the whole five night run for months, this particular night was even more anticipated with profits going straight to aid the reconstruction of Planet Bluegrass.

Yonder Mountain String Band has always played music by its own set of rules. Bending Bluegrass, Rock and countless other influences, Yonder has pioneered a sound of their own. With their traditional lineup of instruments, the band may look like a Bluegrass band at first glance but they’ve created their own music that transcends any genre. Our friends in Greensky Bluegrass were kind enough to take some time out of an idyllic afternoon during Yonder Mountain String Band’s Kinfolk Celebration at Planet Bluegrass in August to play a two song acoustic set exclusively for Listen Up Denver!, Marquee Magazine, and a few friends. Here’s an incredible cover of Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” that pays tribute to The Band’s version while still seeming fresh and original.
