boygenius – August 5th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The girls of boygenius are no strangers to the stage. Although still in their twenties, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus have been writing music and playing shows since their teens. All three artists have performed in front of Colorado fans since 2016, gracing stages at the likes of Lost Lake Lounge, Globe Hall, Bluebird Theatre, The Ogden, Mission Ballroom, and Red Rocks. Then, in 2018 that they joined as a band; united by a love for each other’s music coupled with their disgust with how “women in music” were defined and pitted against each other.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Fox Street w/ YAMN & Tiger Party – Bluebird Theatre – Friday & Saturday, December 30th & 31st

Estimated read time 2 min read

Denver’s own Fox Street has been missing from the scene for much of 2016. From the way lead singer and guitarist Jonathan “Skippy” Huvard tells it, things were pretty close to over for the R&B and blues saturated party band earlier this year before they were offered a landmark two night run at the Bluebird Theatre for New Year’s and they decided to band together and throw a party for the ages.

Moon Taxi – November 5th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

November is one of the best months for live music in Denver and this past Thursday night was a perfect example as Nashville-based indie/jam rockers, Moon Taxi, returned to the Mile High City. The quintet has seen a steady rise in their Denver fan base since first playing Moe’s Original BBQ almost 10 years ago. After that show lead singer Trevor Terndrup saw the Gothic marquee and said “One day, we will get to play in a place like that.” Thursday night was the realization of that dream.

The Sword & All Them Witches – November 2nd – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

For three hours on Monday night, The Gothic was beamed back to the heavy 70’s, prompting visions of what it might have been like to see Mountain open for Deep Purple in 1972. On the road in support of new records, The Sword and All Them Witches rolled into Englewood and laid down one of the best nights of retro Rock and Roll this town has seen in a very long time.

High on Fire – August 8th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

High on Fire has paved the way for an endless list of bands including Mastodon (whose members met at a High on Fire show). Their latest studio effort, Luminiferous, will most certainly top many end-of-year lists, and their live shows are the the stuff of legends. So to say this was a highly anticipated show for many in attendance would be a severe understatement. High on Fire crushed it! It’s no surprise, really. The well of songs they have to pick from is deep. And damn near all of their songs translate well in a live setting.

Futurebirds & Ark Life – January 18th – Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Twenty and thirtysomethings filled the Bluebird Theatre last Saturday evening for a rowdy night with Athens, Georgia alt-country/indie-rock band Futurebirds and opener Ark Life. Talking loudly over beers fans were out with high spirits and came to get loose. Despite very few moments of distinguishable vocals through the ear-bleeding guitar during Futurebirds set, it was sometimes hard to tell what songs were being played but the enthusiastic crowd, energetic performance and howl of the pedal steel alone made the evening.

Pickwick – January 16th – Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

While not packed to the gills, there was a good crowd in The Bluebird last Thursday when Seattle’s Pickwick made a stop in Denver. While trending toward hipster looking 20-somethings, all ages were represented and a good number of those in attendance knew most of the words to the Soul steeped Indie-Rock that was pumping from the PA. The high energy set focused on tracks from the band’s most recent release and while most were delivered flawlessly, there were a few missteps.

Polica – November 26th – Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

Minneapolis indie-electro band Polica wowed a near capacity crowd at the Bluebird two days shy of the Thanksgiving holiday. Channy Leaneagh’s infectious melodies peeked through an auto-tuned haze and dual drummers hammered complex rhythms into the swaying crowd. The set drew heavily from the recently released Shulamith. With indistinct vocals, the night blended into a blur of what felt like one giant groove, expanding into a joyful wrinkle in time.

Phoenix On The Exclamation Point: It’s A Good Thing!

Estimated read time 5 min read

Denver knew Phoenix way back when. We have a history. The kind of history, upon reflection, that was described as “magical” and “iconic” when Listen Up Denver! sat down with Phoenix guitarist, Laurent Brancowitz. Considering the Michael Jackson dance party that erupted at the band’s first visit to Denver in 2009 touring for Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, it’s not much of an exaggeration. If the past encounters between Denver and Phoenix are any sign, their show at Red Rocks will find everyone dancing, no matter what.

MarchFourth Marching Band – June 7th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

MarchFourth Marching Band rolled into town like a bus full of Gypsy circus performers and filled The Bluebird with explosive sights and sounds. This bouncing brass band hails from Portland and they sure keep it wonderfully weird. Stilt walkers, acrobats and an 18 piece band is far from normal at The Bluebird, and that’s why Denver followed this band into the venue like they were following the pied piper into the eye of a beautiful storm that blew everyone’s inhibitions away.
