Front Side Five – March 17th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Platte river may not run green like the Chicago River, but Denverites are no less zealous in their celebration of the patron saint of Ireland. The celebration began on Saturday March 14th, and continued through March 17th in what seemed like a four day non-ending pub crawl. With a firm constitution, and cast iron liver, I made it through all this year’s celebratory activities which culminated in a great night of locals only music at the Bluebird Theater on Colfax.

Houndmouth – February 28th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 4 min read

It’s easy to lump Houndmouth in with the folk-pop revival fueled by footstompers like Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers, but when it comes down to their live performances, incredible four-part harmonies and soaring bluesy guitar solos can silence any disdain you may have for romanticized roadways and cliched old west Americana imagery. Saturday was no exception for the sold-out crowd at the Bluebird Theater, who enjoyed an outstand set from the Indiana band.

Bouncing Souls – December 30th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 4 min read

Beanies and parkas were abundant as fans braved negative eleven-degree temperatures for the first of a two-night Bouncing Souls New Year’s extravaganza at The Bluebird Theater last Tuesday night. Despite some sound issues that frustrated lead singer Greg Attonito, the set was fantastic, covering twenty-five years of explosive sound from the New Jersey based band. A moshpit broke out during the first notes of the first song, and people raised fists in the air, clapped, and screamed the lyrics.

Shakey Graves – December 11th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 2 min read

Shakey Graves sold-out all three shows at the Bluebird Theater this past weekend and you could feel the energy coursing through the room as people crammed in early buzzing with excitement. While men and women in their late 20s to early 30s made up a majority of the audience, you could find the suave elderly rubbing elbows with giddy teens. It was a weeknight show, but that didn’t stop the indie rocker from beginning his set at 10:45 and playing until a mean 12:30 a.m. People left with heavy lids and happy hearts.

Vance Joy – November 22nd – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 3 min read

The Bluebird Theater hosted budding singer-songwriter Vance Joy this past Saturday night. The show had been sold-out for several months and it was apparent once Vance Joy started to strum his first note that the sell-out was justified. Even though the venue was packed, it was easy to catch a glimpse of the rising star who belted out his hand-written love songs to a swooning crowd before he hits the road with Taylor Swift in the coming year.

Tennis – November 7th – Bluebird Theater

Estimated read time 4 min read

Denver band Tennis has seen the success of big stages, TV appearances, and critical acclaim, however their homecoming show Friday night at the Bluebird seemed to lack the same fanfare. The evening was a showcase of some great moments and great material but it didn’t quite reach the fever pitch you’d expect for a new album and a home audience. In fact, the experience was undermined at times by lackluster stage presence and muted fan enthusiasm.
