20 Questions with Trout Steak Revival

Estimated read time 6 min read

If you love Rocky Mountain Bluegrass as much as we do, you’ve surely happened upon the skilled sounds of Trout Steak Revival. The quintet is making waves in our little pond with their elaborate harmonies, which are backed by strong instrumentation and impressive song writing abilities. While the group hails out of Denver, their music was inspired by what lies just beyond our city in the “misty high country” where they say the music was born. They started as an informal Bluegrass Jam group and have made huge leaps in years since.

Overstepping Out: Mike Gordon and the Philosophy of Out

Estimated read time 9 min read

“When in doubt…go completely out.” Legendary musician and Zen master Col. Bruce Hampton Ret. uttered these words in Mike Gordon’s seminal feature film, Outside Out. Mike has always lived by this creed whether it be providing Phish with some of its weirder elements—speaking relatively of course—or integrating the “Philosophy of Out” into his ever evolving solo work. For Gordon, prepositions like “out” and “in” are not dichotomous, but rather, synonymous.

A line of casually dressed baby boomers wrapped around the corner of 14th & Spruce Tuesday in anticipation of blues legend Buddy Guy at a near capacity Boulder Theater. It was Buddy’s second Colorado visit in three months and aside from swapping red rocks for salmon and turquoise walls, the show was quite a bit similar. It was night of beer drinking, gospel style audience affirmation, stories, and dirty overdriven blues.

Mike Doughty – October 29th – Twist & Shout

Estimated read time 2 min read

There have been many in-stores at Twist & Shout over the years. Some, like Trey Anastasio and String Cheese Incident, were more or less ticketed affairs that saw lines stretch around the block and scalpers get top-dollar for wristbands. Others, like Tuesday’s intimate acoustic set with Mike Doughty, are much more mellow, laid back events. Though it only lasted 30 minutes, the ten song set showcased Doughty then and now and satisfied the hardcore fans in attendance.
