The funky Meters – March 1st – The Fox Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Fox Theatre’s 20th Anniversary Celebration kicked off last Thursday with an electrifying performance from The funky Meters. With a line-up that reads like a “Who’s Who” of New Orleans heavy hitters, these guys have been funkifying the masses for over two decades now. The band does a fabulous job keeping the spirit of The Meters alive and well as they bring those songs, and the sounds of New Orleans, to a new generation.

Bonobo – February 24th – The Fox Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Simon Green, better known as Bonobo, has been huge on the underground electronic scene since the early 2000’s. He is best known for his intricate down-tempo soundscapes and heavy beat driven studio albums. He’s a pioneer of the genre and often tours with a live band, but on top of that he is also widely known for his DJ sets. Friday was a DJ set and despite hearing mixed reviews before the show, we walked away shushing all of the naysayers and soaked in sweat from dancing. It was a wild night at The Fox!

Estimated read time 5 min read

People were lined up at the doors early on Saturday to be sure and get their favorite spot in the multi-tiered Fox Theatre in Boulder. The Fox grooved hard all weekend for Soulive’s Snowlive Festival as the crowd filled the whole floor and danced the night away, powered by live access to America’s premiere trio of funksters, Soulive. The trio was joined by Jennifer Hartswick’s tight and right horn section, and JJ Grey, who brought in a large crowd of his own and was energetic and lively performing with Soulive.

Kung Fu – February 2nd – The Fox Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Despite the news of a major snowstorm headed for the Front Range, many people came out in the snow and freezing temperatures to check out the relatively newer supergroup, Kung Fu. While most who made the trek to The Fox had never seen Kung Fu, there was still quite a buzz about these guys since they had already amazed other area crowds at shows earlier on their Occupy Colorado tour. We can only hope that the sounds of Kung Fu will occupy our ears and hearts again very soon.

People Under The Stairs – January 25th – The Fox Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

Last Wednesday, People Under The Stairs provided a nice break from the music scene that has taken over Colorado in recent years. It was great to one of the originators of the Hip-Hop sound rocking a show to nearly sold out crowd and staying true to the old school roots that made them who they are. It’s also nice knowing a macbook and 15 midi controllers aren’t completely necessary to create a timeless sound. It was almost refreshing seeing a crew make music the “old fashioned” way.

Reverend Horton Heat Talks Laughing, Crying, & California Gurls

Estimated read time 7 min read

Saturday’s bill at The Ogden Theatre could not have got any better . . . unless maybe you beer battered both bands, country fried them, smothered them in Sausage gravy, and served them with a cold bottle of Lone Star. Denver was the final stop on a Colorado leg of the Laughing and Crying Tour and Jim Heath, the Rev himself, took a few minutes on Thursday before taking the stage at The Fox Theatre in Boulder to talk to Listen Up Denver! about the new album, touring, and “California Gurls.”
