Summergrind – August 16th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 10 min read

On August 16th, droves of Denverites came out for the Punk/Ska/Rock extravaganza that is the SummerGrind festival. The one day event, featuring 25 bands spread across three venues on S. Broadway in Englewood, was jam-packed with great acts – including big names like Morning Glory, Reno Divorce and The Suicide Machines, and a whole deluge of amazing local acts, creating a perfect storm of musical mayhem. Though it was hot at the outdoor stage, the AC in the Gothic offered a welcome retreat into a whole other world of madness.

Black Flag – July 31st – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Seeing Black Flag was equivalent to checking a band off of a bucket list for fans that were too young to have seen the band in it’s heyday. The somewhat disappointing concert was overpriced, with one terrible opening band; the main act was more like a Black Flag cover band that happened to have an actual former member. They played well but lacked the spark that previous members of the band created and it certainly wasn’t what Henry Rollins described as “the perfect soundtrack to a full scale riot.”

Jackie Greene – June 20th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

Last Friday night The Gothic Theatre was the place to be for good ol’ fashioned Americana Rock-n-Roll. Jackie Greene was in the house and while he didn’t bring the hippest and youngest crowd in town out to see him perform, his fans are loyal and passionate. There was plenty of elbow room to move and dance on the floor of the Art Deco theater but it by no means felt empty as aging Deadheads put back their whiskey shots and puffed joints while their more conservative contemporaries pretended not to notice.

Nathaniel Rateliff – November 29th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

It was the day after Thanksgiving, and there’s no doubt there was a still a festive spirit in the air at The Gothic despite more than a few concert goers surely shaking out the cobwebs leftover from washing their turkey down with a few too many glasses of wine. As the clock pushed 9pm, the lines on Broadway stretched halfway down the block and a sea of Hipsters, a smattering of Baby Boomers, and a healthy crowd of 30-somethings were more than a little excited to check out the Nathaniel Rateliff double bill that was on tap for the evening.

Greensky Bluegrass – November 15th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

It’s safe to say the secret is out about Greensky Bluegrass. Their days of playing small rooms is all but over, and everyone at the Gothic Theatre last Friday knew this might be the last time to catch this band in such an intimate venue. They may on a meteoric rise to the top of the Bluegrass world, but in the end they are just five friends from Michigan, gathered around a single microphone, playing the music that brought them together.

Father John Misty – June 18th – Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

“We couldn’t quite fill that place, so we had to bring in a bus full of convicts to fill this show” Josh Tillman scoffed about the last minute move of his show from the Ogden to the Gothic this past Tuesday. Though a smaller venue, the large, gaudy psychedelic stage set framed by two giant disco balls fit just fine and twenty-somethings filled the room all the way to the back. Father John Misty’s sarcastic swagger, smooth voice, and flamboyant moves more than made up for a venue change and harsh sound, resulting in a fun evening, as always.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Dawes – Mishawaka & The Gothic – Friday, May 24th & Sunday, May 26th

Estimated read time 3 min read

It’s been decades since the Southern California sun first breathed life into the Americana-laced rock of acts like The Byrds, The Eagles, Poco, and Jackson Brown in the late ’60s and ’70s. While there has been resurgence of that sound in recent years, one L.A. band has emerged head and shoulders above the rest to carry on the legacy that McGuinn, Henley, Frey, Brown and others helped to define. That band is Dawes.

Deer Tick – April 4th – The Gothic Theatre

Estimated read time 1 min read

Deer Tick rolled through town last week and played to a packed house at The Gothic Theatre down in Englewood. Despite the fact that they were missing their rhythm section, the band soldiered on a trio and thrilled the crowd with set that was a little bit more Country than it was Rock-n-Roll. Deer Tick is known for wild shows, and last week’s set at The Gothic didn’t disappoint. Local rockers The Knew opened the night with every ounce of the passion and fervor they are known for.
