G. Love & Special Sauce – March 16th – The Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The day before Saint Patrick’s Day is what we Irish like to call Saint Practice day. It’s the day that we begin stretching our livers for the main event and judging by the sheer number of individuals in green and gold filling the floor of the Ogden, Denver must be 90% Irish. As G. Love spit out the verse “Leprechauns smoking that green shit down,” we all knew the Ogden was the place to be to ring in St. Patty’s Day proper.

Rob Drabkin’s Birthday Bash – January 19th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 3 min read

For the third year in a row Drabkin put on a birthday concert which united his family, friends and fans at a packed Bluebird Theatre. While Drabkin can be usually be seen on stages playing by his lonesome, or with a stripped down band since he is of the singer-songwriter class…on Saturday he brought out the big guns for his birthday bash. Drabkin’s enthusiasm beamed from his face the entire night, and the crowd returned the favor. Birthday or no, this big-haired boy can put on a hell of a show.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo & Johnny Clegg Band – August 9th – Denver Botanic Gardens

Estimated read time 7 min read

The Denver Botanic Gardens were taken over last week by two legendary bands from South Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Johnny Clegg Band. While Ladysmith focused on a cappella music and Clegg on Rock based Pop music, both artists showcased their African roots in unique and different ways. In some ways the evening was as much a history lesson as it was a concert.

String Cheese Incident – July 5th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

When String Cheese takes over Red Rocks for a run of shows it’s always a party and last night was no different. It took the stands a while to feel crowded, but slowly but surely the freaks filtered in and by 7:30 the air was buzzing with anticipation. Though it looked like only three quarters of the tickets were sold for the first night of this summer’s three night run, the boys didn’t hold back and really brought it right out of the gates. Get ready for night two . . . the boys are on fire!!!

Greensky Bluegrass – February 8th – The Bluebird Theatre

Estimated read time 6 min read

Greensky Bluegrass raged for a packed house on Wednesday night at The Bluebird Theater here in the Jamgrass capital of the world…sunny Colorado! The crowd was surprisingly diverse and no one was acting like it was a Wednesday night. The beer flowed, the brains fried, and the Banjo rang-out like there was no tomorrow. There is an outlaw element to Greensky’s sound as they blend roots and jam while not sacrificing musicianship for speed to create one of the most mature sounds in the Jamgrass genre.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo – January 26th – The Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 5 min read

To be a widely recognized band of musicians, or a musical collective, is an achievement in and of itself, but to be a 50 year old Grammy winning musical institution is a feat not accomplished by many. For Ladysmith Black Mambazo this is a reality. The all male a cappella group was founded in 1960 by Joseph Shabalala and last Thursday at The Boulder Theater the group demonstrated why they are they still a powerhouse of an ensemble with an absolutely jaw dropping performance that left our reviewer at a loss for words.

The String Cheese Incident – November 27th – Athens, GA

Estimated read time 1 min read

The String Cheese Incident returned to the Georgia Theatre last night in Athens, GA. While the famed theatre burned a few years back, it has been reconstructed in all it’s former glory and Billy and the boys brought the house down again with favorites such as “Missin’ Me,” “Cottonmouth,” “‘Round The Wheel,” and even Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies.” Maybe it would have been too obvious, but were we the only ones hoping for a bust out of “Burnin’ Down The House?”

Blitzen Trapper & Dawes – November 7th – The Fox Theatre

Estimated read time 8 min read

On Monday night at The Fox, LA band Dawes played one of the most impressive rock shows I have witnessed in years. No, they didn’t have the production value of Roger Waters’ “The Wall” performance or the raw, testosterone fueled, energy of a Rage Against The Machine show, but what they did have was a staggering amount of musical talent. It was simply overflowing from these four men as they put on a clinic on how to be the best band you can be.

Greensky Bluegrass “Totally Bitchin’ 80’s” – October 31st – The Fox Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

The Greensky Bluegrass 80’s themed Halloween party rocked the Fox on Monday as they turned the music from what is arguably one of the coolest decades into a good ole fashioned barn burnin’ hoedown. It was one of the most unique takes on a Halloween costume we have ever witnessed and it most certainly made for a “Totally Bitchin’ 80s Dance Party” that most will not be forgetting anytime soon.

Trevor Hall & Cas Haley – October 27th – The Ogden

Estimated read time 6 min read

Last Thursday was Reggae night at The Ogden and it featured Cas Haley and Trevor Hall. These are guys putting their all into music and bringing Reggae to a crowd that wouldn’t typically listen to it. Trevor’s Reggae is radio friendly and strewn with pop; not really roots Reggae, but Reggae that appeals to kids who have no idea who Jimmy Cliff is. That said, the music was full of energy and they had the whole place jumping all night.
