It’s no stretch to say that The Meters single handedly defined New Orleans funk. Although they broke up in 1977, this Friday and Saturday at Denver’s Ogden Theatre, Leo Nocentelli, Ziggy Modeliste, and George Porter Jr., three of the four founding members reunite as The Meter Men. They will join forces with Phish keyboardist Page McConnell for a historic and funky night of music sure to please and not to be missed!

PICK OF THE WEEK: The New Mastersounds – Cervantes’ Masterpiece – November 16th & 17th

The New Mastersounds are a four-piece band based in Leeds, England, whose modern take on vintage soul-jazz, funk and rock draws influences from Jimmies McGriff, Smith, and Hendrix, as well as their most closely-associated mentors, The Meters. Try to imagine Grant Green and Lou Donaldson having a fight in a Hammond Organ shop while James Brown holds the coats, and you have some idea of what to expect from this band.

The funky Meters – March 1st – The Fox Theatre

The Fox Theatre’s 20th Anniversary Celebration kicked off last Thursday with an electrifying performance from The funky Meters. With a line-up that reads like a “Who’s Who” of New Orleans heavy hitters, these guys have been funkifying the masses for over two decades now. The band does a fabulous job keeping the spirit of The Meters alive and well as they bring those songs, and the sounds of New Orleans, to a new generation.

George Porter Jr. Talks Recording Some Old Meters Songs & Playing With David Byrne

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit took a crowd of Southern Boys and Hipsters on a real roller-coaster ride of pretty epic proportions as they thrilled us with amazing, high energy rock and lulled us gently with tender country flavored ballads that tugged at heart strings. The setlist cherry picked many of the gifted songwriters best tunes and reached all the way back to some of the first ones he wrote during his days with The Drive-By Truckers.
