Wakarusa – Mulberry Mountain, AR – Part 2

Estimated read time 13 min read

It’s time for Part Two of the wonderful and wacky world of Wakarusa! Days three and four of the festival featured music from everyone from Matisyahu to Big Gigantic and while there were several massive thunderstorms, they didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd or our team of reviewers and photographers. Saturday morning kicked-off with a potluck breakfast and by the time Sunday evening’s epic rainstorm rolled around our team was already planning for next year!

BoomBox – May 5th – The Ogden

Estimated read time 3 min read

On the tail end of a day for The Derby and Cinco De Mayo, there was only one place to end up and continue to get away with a silly hat – The Ogden Theater – East Colfax’s premier music destination. And the hats were out! Derby hats, Sphinx hats, and Sombreros. The variety of hats matched the various collections of friends and music lovers, all of whom had made the conscious decision to attend the sold out, funktronic, groove fest that plays from the BoomBox.

Split Lip Rayfield Talks Wakarusa And The Split Livers

Estimated read time 7 min read

Split Lip Rayfield is often described as a mix of bluegrass and country with an accent of metal. No other band delivers the experience of the homemade gas-tank bass, mandolin, and banjo. Together, these three men burn up speakers and stages alike as they tour and play music for the fan faithful. Mando player Wayne Gottstine recently took some time to share with us at Listen Up Denver! about the documentary Never Make it Home, The Split Livers, Wakarusa, and why we should come out and see them this weekend.

The Frankenstein Brothers – April 25th – The Gothic

Estimated read time 5 min read

Tucked away down off South Broadway is what I like to call The Ogden’s prettier little sister, The Gothic Theatre. The Gothic simply is a little smaller and less run down than her sister venue, and while she may not reside as close to the city, at least you can find parking when you go to visit her. What type of party could this little sister throw that could drag all of us out of the woodwork to Englewood? How about one hosted by the Frankenstein Brothers – the love child of musical mad scientists That 1 Guy and Buckethead?

The Lumineers Talk Their New Record & Their Contagious Live Show

Estimated read time 6 min read

East coast natives Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites found solace in music after losing their best friend and brother in 2002. When they headed West and teamed up with Neyla Pekarek, a classically trained Denver native, they struck proverbial gold with The Lumineers. This up and coming trio is currently on a self booked tour, and their self titled album dropped today. Listen Up Denver! caught up with Pekarek recently to find out more about the new album, the tour, and the meaning of “Wakarusa.”

SunSquabi – Catastrophic EP

Estimated read time 3 min read

SunSquabi has been riding a rather impressive wave since their debut at the Global Dance Festival last summer. Their sound is a liquid-funk fusion of live instruments and electronica and they have recently released a new EP entitled Catastrophic. Clocking in at right around 35 minutes, this is a record that is worth a listen, if not four. Get on board with SunSquabi now, because they might just go on to do some pretty big things in the future.
